The actor who played him was so talented with two swords it would have been a shame not to use it.

Well then they could have at least had good choreography instead of shit. So it was a waste after all.

As for the poll ITT, people are underestimating Aragorn. The dude is literally a superhuman and was pretty much untouchable on the Battle of Pelennor fields. GRRM has said that the LotR characters would smack the ASoIaF characters easily as heck, so Arthur Dayne is super out. Aragorn could compete with Achilles as far as I reckon.
