I found the tick on my ankle about 3 weeks ago and pulled the whole thing off pretty easily. It was still small and not engorged so I didn't think much of it. My doctor said to just keep an eye on it.

I noticed the red circle this morning and stopped at a local clinic since it's Sunday. They observed it and agreed that Lyme was likely. They took my blood to confirm and prescribed minocycline.

Holy shit dude, this is weirdly similar to my experience from a month ago. I pulled what I thought was a small scab off of my ankle before realizing it was an unengorged deer tick. I didnt develop a rash, but the initial wound site still hadnt gone away a couple of days later, so I was a little freaked out.

I went to the doctor and they told me that it was very unlikely that I would have contracted Lyme since the tick was unengorged - they said transmission is rare if the tick hasnt been on you for at least 30 hours or so. He still prescribed me a weeks worth of doxycycline to be on the safe side, and thankfully nothing more ever came of it.

Anyway I thought this was interesting. I hope your treatment goes well, TC.

Interesting choice, usually we use doxycycline but i suppose minocycline would probably do the trick

it was a funny comment i give it that, but to the TC hopefully you get better soon just make sure to take the medication fully you want to kill the infection so it doesn't come back.

ticks usually live in the woods or grasses so if anyone is wondering where they come from, probably from that.

True enough, but a lot of people will end up missing the tick, don't get the infamous "bullseye rash," etc. Maybe some aren't knowledgeable enough to know about the potential dangers of tick bites so they just remove the tick and that's that. Out of sight, out of mind. I would also imagine that symptoms wouldn't appear right away, at least nothing major. Maybe you would end up with a slight fever, but nothing that would give you pause and make you rush to a doctor right away.

Then later on when you have general malaise and are struggling to function and testing can find nothing wrong, it's more than likely just going to be labelled as psychosomatic rather than being assumed to be the Lyme Disease bacteria at work. Maybe it even gets wrongly diagnosed as something else entirely. A lot of doctors really aren't very knowledgeable about this stuff still. They will just order basic testing to try to rule out different things but that's about it. Then the longer it takes to identify and treat, the more damage is done. It's honestly quite scary.

Couple things:

1. Lyme disease Bell's palsy tends to be transient with full recovery.

2. If a chiropractor or naturopath uses the term "Chronic Lyme" get the hell out immediately and demand a full refund.

3. Doxycycline used to be really cheap. I have no idea why it's so expensive now.

A doctor with even a basic education would know how to diagnose Lyme disease without darkfield microscopy.

1. Is the patient even in an area with endemic Lyme disease?

2. Presence of erythema migrans?

If the answer is yes to both, treat.

If the answer is yes to 1 and no to 2, consider Lyme serology. If positive, move to darkfield microscopy.

That said, patients GROSSLY and I mean GROTESQUELY overrate their knowledge of Lyme disease. I can't tell you how many patients I've had DEMANDING treatment for Lyme disease despite literally never setting foot in an area where the Ixodes tick lives.

I'd rather have treatable Lyme disease than the permanent red meat allergy.

The only tick I've ever been bitten by was actually two months ago. It wasn't one that carries Lyme, but it could have given me Rocky Mountain spotted fever if I was unlucky.

You don't need to do anymore testing if your serology is positive on Western blot.

Obviously if the doctor is pretty sure it's Lyme disease without specific testing then sure you don't need to test. I'm just saying if you aren't sure, there is no reason not to immediately rule it out given how severe it can get if left untreated.
