I've read quite a few, and yeah, many of them were really challenging. I was surprised by some of them being on the list, but I think they basically made sense. --- Sunhawk's main alternate account. Not surprised The Silmarillion is on there although their reasoning is kinda dumb, but it is Buzzfeed. I really just read the list to see if it was on there.
I had to read it about 3 times to fully get it. You'll constantly be flipping back and forth between the text and the index, glossary, and map. There's just so many names, places, things, gods, animals, weapons, and people to remember. The kinda archaic way it's presented and it's general vagueness about things doesn't help either. You have to be a Tolkien nerd or in the process of becoming one to really enjoy it. --- https://imgur.com/hslUvRN When I sin I sin real good. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I was hoping for books that are challenging more in the sense that they tackle uncomfortable/jarring subjects.
Still looks like an interesting list. (Praising a buzzfeed page - never thought I'd see myself doing that.) I've read The Silmarilion already and I somewhat question its inclusion here. The only really difficult part is needing to keep of all the fucking names you end up reading. Like - you would need to actually plot out family trees to keep it all neat. But you could also do what I did, which is to not try memorizing all of them and just use the abundant context clues to remember who everyone is. --- This is LinksLiege's signature. Not surprised The Silmarillion is on there although their reasoning is kinda dumb, but it is Buzzfeed. I really just read the list to see if it was on there. I read it for the first time last month and was surprised to find it fairly straightforward. From what I knew of it, I thought it could be difficult to get into. But I ended up loving it, and I completed the book in about a week. Plotwise none of it is complex. The language is a bit obtuse at times but the story is easy to digest. Demigods end up on their own planet doing their thing, then they fuck off to their own special island, and someone plants some trees, and they're so pretty that people get obsessed over it and they make rings, and then people fight over the rings.
That might not be a perfect summary. --- This is LinksLiege's signature. It is fantastic. ... Copied to Clipboard!

i'm glad i never had to read Finnegan's Wake. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was supposed to be required reading in my 12th grade AP English class, but after getting off to a rocky start of it with group reading in class, literally no one did the assigned reading at home, and so the teacher just decided to scrap it and the lesson plan for it and move on to the next thing lol. he was pretty cool about it. he understood that it had.... shall we say, marginal appeal. iirc he even did say something about how we were lucky it wasn't Finnegan's Wake instead. for what it's worth, my dad wrote his undergrad thesis on the beginning and end of Finnegans Wake. an in-depth study of the whole book is... probably more than a PhD's worth of material --- peanut butter and dick ...
