My grandpa has been battling lung cancer for a few months, and my grandma just called, apparently he's struggling like hell to breathe right now.

My mom left to take him to the ER but I'm fucking terrified and in tears right now.

All of my friends are asleep and I have nobody to vent to right now. I can't do anything and it's tearing me up. All I can really do is wait for news.

Thanks, everyone.

I've stopped immediately panicking and crying, but I'm still extremely anxious and I don't know what to do with myself.

I'm trying to just play games and watch TV and shit but I get up every few minutes and just pace. I'm pretty much glued to my phone in case there's any news.

I'm sorry, my grandparents are all gone. Can you go there?
Edit: I assumed the worst, I'm sorry for that

Try to find something to do, even if it's just swapping games every fifteen minutes. News is gonna come really slowly and you're gonna drive yourself bonkers pacing around like an animal.

If it comes down to it, I'll drive up there for sure. I'm not a great driver and actually just got my license recently (quite late to it, tbh), and the hospital is around 40 minutes away, but I'd have to.

My niece and nephew are sleeping over and it's just my dad and myself here now. We couldn't leave the kids alone, and taking them is pretty out of the question too, so I think it would come down to me driving there. I think I could make it, though.

I want to say that it's not going to come to the worst case scenario, but I really don't know. My aunt is visiting (she lives in Pennsylvania, we live in Missouri) at my grandpa's request. He was telling her that she didn't need to come see him for several weeks, but then suddenly asked her to come a week and a half ago. We've all been worried that he's doing worse than he's been saying, and with this incident, I'm extremely worried for him.

It doesn't help that he's been having a rough time from the chemo. He's been weak and pretty sick from it, and even passed out a few times a week or so ago. We think it was from the blood pressure medicine he was taking, but it's very concerning.

idk. I'll do everything in my power to get to the hospital if things are looking bad.

That's probably the best idea. My anxiety is going wild right now, and I really need to distract myself.

You should go there really. It's only 40 minutes that's not too bad.

Tough deal for sure man, I hope everything works out and it's just a scare.
Keep it together as best you can, I know that's not easy to do, but doctors and medicine have come a long way.
If he's in the hospital, he's in good hands. They won't always have quick answers so just understand uncertainty isn't a bad thing.

I'm wrestling with it. I'm really hoping that my mom texts me news soon so I can know what to do. I've never driven at night, nor on the highway, and I'm terrified about both. I'm also not sure which hospital they'll be at. I think there are a few, so there's no telling. At the same time, I'll never forgive myself if something happens and I could have been there for it but wasn't.

I wanted to go with her in the first place, but she rushed out very soon after she got the call, and just said I'd get in the way when I asked.

I hate doing this, I really really do. But maybe you need to get up there.
My grandparents were all against going to the doctor like you wouldn't believe. I didn't see them as often as I'd have liked seeing as they were 900 miles away. But if it's 40 minutes, you should go, maybe it's a scary moment, maybe it's more. Go man, go see your grandpa

I texted my mom to check on things and to determine if I need to drive up there.

She said he's stable at the moment and starting tests and X-rays. I told her to let me know if I should drive up there. I hope this means that we're in the clear for now.

I need to get over my anxiety and just go for it in situations like this. I've always been really scared of driving though, which is why it took me years to get my license. I only really drive a few blocks at a time around town, and I'm pretty anxious even at that point.

Sorry. I feel like I'm being dismissive of everyone's advice, and that I'm being awful for not driving it right away. I'm just scared and tired and really worried.

Good to hear things are stable, but stable (I hate this) doesn't mean just fine.
If you're afraid to drive maybe put some emergency taxi money away for just in case for things like this.
I don't think anyone is thinking you're dismissive. It's a tough deal and people deal with adversity differently, you gotta do what you gotta do.
I wish you and your grandpa the best, go see him anyway, he'll be happy to see you

Well, I got another text. Still no definitive information. Apparently they're only allowing two people back with him, and my aunt and grandma went, so my mom doesn't know anything, beyond that he's being admitted for now.

Still on standby to leave if I need to, but I'm very very tired and am struggling to stay awake. It sounds like I wouldn't have been able to see him if I had gone earlier, so I feel a little less bad about not going, but I'm still ashamed of letting my anxiety get the better of me once again.

Visited him for around 5 hours today. Not sure if I'd say he's doing well or not. He's speaking and seems to be in good spirits, but he's had a few periods of respiratory distress. They were still waiting on a second x-ray and some additional tests when we left.

What we know: he has pneumonia, evidently a blood clot somewhere, and some kind of fluid on his lungs. If that's specifically what triggered these attacks, or if they're just from the cancer + chemo + the fact that he's had asthma for years and are unrelated, we don't entirely know. He's supposed to start another round of chemo on Thursday, but none of us think he should, he doesn't seem up to it at all.

I'm glad I got to visit him, and I hope he'll be okay. There's just no telling what will happen from here. I'm still pretty down about it, but I'm glad I was able to see him today and visit for a while.
