So taking in account Misty looks a little older in Pokemon Red/Blue and as a Gym Leader, I wonder if Red/Blue actually takes place somewhat after the anime or it's simply it's own continuity.

I think the games are based more on the comic (separate continuity) than the anime.
Ash is based on Red though, and Gary is based on Blue to a certain extent. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

The games came first. The anime basically made a kid's show out of it so the main cast is like 10-14.

The games are main Canon.
Manga is closest vision to the Creator's original concept of Pokemon.
