I've gone from weighing 223 to 198. Reason for arm size disparity is due to bicep surgery last year. For consistency's sake I'm flexing in both pics.

Yeah, I drastically reduced carbs overall but still eat them before and after lifting. I also wasn't able to do much cardio after surgery and intentionally ate a lot to bulk my surgically-repaired arm back up, so that was a fattening combination.

I tore my bicep lifting a 700 lb tire at a strongman competition in March 2017.

Here's what looks like (it's not too gruesome but you can see the bicep floating free from the elbow): fQ9Q0vS

There are lots of good routines you can start with but two that come to mind for me are my own: https://sites.google.com/site/strengthfaqs/noobstrong

And Jim Wendler's 5/3/1.

Nice! I figure that's kind of the evolution of a lot of lifters. In my case, I'll probably get into strongman, but I think I remember you saying you already did that. 198 is a way better class than 220, imo lol

It was the opposite for me, haha. Started out trying to be a fighter, couldn't afford classes or a car, and got into lifting instead. I do plan on competing in powerlifting and eventually strongman, but probably not 220 anytime soon. I competed at 220 in my last powerlifting meet and took 1st and 198 in my last strongman show, which is when I tore my bicep.

That's badass that you want to do strongman. Do you just do "normal" weightlifting at the moment?

High protein, moderate fat, and low carbs except before and after weightlifting. For example, lunch at work today is three eggs, a slice of salmon, and a few strawberries. If I'm not lifting then usually the only carbs I eat come from fruit and veggies.

I do a lot of cardio. Muay Thai 3-4 times a week and 1-2 days of running, either HIIT or an hour jog. I enjoy cardio as long as I have good music.

Thanks. I will bulk again but it'll be with much more wholesome foods next time. Last year I just wanted to completely blitz my way up in weight to build my arm back up after surgery. I think food choice is more important the older you get.

I'll also add that when I feel like it I'll have cheat meals, and I drink heavily no more than one day a week, usually Saturday when I go to parties and shows. If I've had no cheat meals throughout the week at all then I make Saturday an entire cheat day to load up on carbs. Aside from just letting me enjoy life, it also has anabolic properties and keeps my strength and muscle mass levels up. I would not recommend full cheat days to people who aren't extremely active, though.

Nah I'm just curious. I'm in my mid 20s now, and while I have no trouble putting on muscle, I just can't work out getting ripped. I feel like I end up hovering around 15-18% bf. Just nice to know I still have years left to try to get to that level haha.

Yeah, I was just being cheeky. I'm fine with being older and I feel exactly the same as I did throughout my 20s.

Depending on your metabolism you might have to try different things, but there's no reason you can't get to where you want if you're disciplined enough. You can still enjoy s*** and eat the food you want to some of the time, just not most of it obviously.

PPP, I have a forearms question

When I was a boulderer I would leave the gym so fried I could hardly grab my steering wheel

I haven't bouldered in many years. But I started a forearm hypertrophy program (r/GripTrainings hypertrophy routine) and I don't feel anywhere near as fried.

Should I work my forearms til they're fried? Or is progressive overload the only thing that truly matters in the end?

Both can mean different things, but progressive overload is usually more important. Trashing a muscle until it's sore means you introduced a new stimulus, but that doesn't necessarily make it an effective one. You may or may not get more hypertrophy from being sore. With progressive overload, if you've increased your performance then you know for sure you've made gains.

Sometimes you'll get stronger without necessarily eliciting much hypertrophy, though, and that's where crazy exercises can come in handy. Grip training is better overall but you can also try using a wrist roller as a finisher to really fry the forearms at the end of your session. Also, check out Fat Gripz online.

In my opinion and experience, soreness is also a more valuable indicator for areas that are comprised of slow-twitch muscle fibers resistant to force - calves, abs, and forearms. It shouldn't be the only goal and if you're not sore it doesn't mean you didn't get a good workout, though.
