"Male" and "female" define one of two variants in a gender-dimorphic species.

The idea that genders are spectrum is insane. Having an erroneous X or Y chromosome isn't a new gender on the spectrum, it would be like classifying a person with Downs syndrome something other than homo-sapien because they have an extra chromosome.

Here's an elaboration on what the person in the OP is referring to when talking about the views of scientists:
https://medium.com/@juliaserano/transgender-people-and-biological-sex-myths-c2a9bcdb4f4a
For example this piece cites an article in Nature:
https://www.nature.com/news/sex-redefined-1.16943

I didn't waste my time watching the video but my guess is that there's a disconnect between biological definitions of sex, and "psychological" definitions of sex, and how people attempt to leverage oversimplified and incorrect biological definitions of sex to attempt to reconcile their "psychological" definition as rational.

In reality, the biological definition of sex via sex chromosomes is not sufficient. Reality is much more complex than that, and it's probably much more realistic to talk about sex typical phenotypic characteristics than to binarize on the basis of sex chromosomes.

However, how do we identify sex on a day to day basis 'psychologically'? We typically rely on things like secondary sex characteristics. But this gets us into hot water when considering transpeople, so to rationalize the view you might fall back to some elementary biological definition, like sex chromosomes.

Philip Batterham, President of the International Genetics Federation, acknowledges that some women have Y chromosomes.

Only because they either have a defective SRY gene or Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. Either way, they're rendered sterile because of it.

This is just an excerpt of that rambling essay that illustrates the thought process behind the person who wrote it.

"Point #1 (that our brains are completely un-sexed) is false. For starters, every single nerve cell in our brains has sex hormone receptors, which turn genes on or off in response to sex hormones such as testosterone or estrogen. None of us can say precisely what effects these hormones elicit in our brains there is obviously a lot of gender diversity among human beings, so it is likely a spectrum of outcomes rather than a binary all-or-none response. But the one thing that we can say is that the notion that our brains remain completely untouched by sex is untrue."

To explain why this is completely illogical, think about the Earth. A person could say about the Earth that it has an atmosphere made up overwhelmingly of mostly nitrogen, and oxygen. By the same logic that this person applies, one could say that the atmosphere isn't mostly Oxygen and Nitrogen because the Earth has 0.0000009% Xeon in it's atmosphere. No one can be entirely sure what role exactly Xeon plays in the composition of the atmosphere and its effects on it but what we can say is that the notion that the atmosphere remains entirely untouched by "Xeon" is untrue.

I don't see any particular issue with that reasoning.

(Although the premise could be argued against, there is a vast literature on the effect of hormones on the brain, both organizationally and functionally. So to say we don't have any idea how much is kinda silly.)

No, despite your attempt to make it seem like that is the analogy, it's really more equivalent to parallel it with:
"The atmosphere is made of oxygen and nitrogen."
"No, there's xeon in there too, for example."
"But it's such a small percentage we can just ignore it"
"The percentage doesn't denote importance. Small things can have large effects!"

Though, I don't think this is a very good analogy to begin with.

Not really, no. Xenon is a noble gas and is mostly nonreactive.
Argon is is the next one down anyway, but it's also a noble gas.

Of course it isn't. Argon, neon, and helium are only present because they are products of radioactive decay; methane is only present because of animal farts. The only components of the atmosphere that have purpose are nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and ozone (in the upper atmosphere). Everything else is just there and serves no real purpose.

I just skimmed it a little but my impression is that when biologists talk about sex they consider several different things, not just gonads or chromosomes. And the more they look the more they see that it's not so easy to draw a distinct line between males having one set of the things and females having the other set.

Does anyone on the left even believe that? I thought the left stance was that biological sex and gender were too different things?

I'm more on the Left, and that's definitely what I believe. Biological sex =/= gender, I mean. Biological sex is scientifically proven; gender is a bit more complicated.

Born with a dick- you're male.

Born with a vagina- you're female. Doesn't matter how you mutilate your genitals afterward to have some weird caricature of the opposite genitalia.

Hope this clears it up for you.

How it is you listen to Jordan Peterson addressing anything is beyond me.

Jordan is pretty dumb on some things (religion), but as far as I can tell, he's the only person really making moves to raise awareness on how people are different beyond race, gender, and sexuality. His talks on the dichotomy of open/creative people versus conservative/working/narrow minded noobs is interesting. I'd really prefer people to get beyond these forms of diversity that are more shallow and biologically rooted, so we can discuss people on a psychological level based on desires and motives. There's the real substance and that will help drive civilization in the right direction.
