I'm trying to get Google Fiber installed at more locations for my job and it's taking forever. We've got them at one building and the service has been much better than Spectrum's cable modems.

Didnt they discontinue the Google Fiber project because it costed too much?

No, it's still an existing service. They just slowed down their construction/rollout very heavily.

I forgot about fiber... Oh s***, it's available in the OC! Too bad it's only in one city, it seems. They gotta expand that ish.

So serious question here, google fiber is "really fast", right? What about in 10 years? They'll be extremely outdated. Do they have to redo all of the cables or whatever?

I don't know much about it, but it seems very short sighted to me

fiber optic literally supports up to the speed of light, the cables are never going to be the bottleneck.

for real. A small part of the reason I was excited to move to Austin was google fiber. Four years later and they're still only in south Austin

Current optical (optical = fiber, electrical = copper) ethernet standards support 10 Gbps connectivity, but it depends on their network infrastructure as well. You can run 10 Gbps cables and terminate them on switches that only support up to 1 Gbps.

So if they currently have everyone plugged into 10 Gbps ports, then they'd essentially just be waiting on end-user devices like PC and/or video game console manufacturers to start putting 10 Gbps ethernet ports in their stuff and they'd be able to reasonably upgrade people to 10 Gbps connectivity without too much hassle. They'd have to give people 10 Gbps capable modems and/or make sure the electrical/optical conversion device that they install in the home/business (the fiber jack) is capable of 10 Gbps connectivity as well. Then they'd pretty much be good to go.

If they've got people plugged into 1 Gbps ports, then they'd need to upgrade to switches that have all 10 Gbps ports vs 1 Gbps ports.

what about when cables support above the speed of light. people will feel pretty stupid then.

Cable companies generally dig their trenches bigger than needed for present day and run excess cable (aka "dark fiber"). Many cities are built out with the future in mind, but even so, cable technologies are constantly marching forward, improving.

Yeah... That's one of the reasons I was excited so quickly about Google Fiber when they made the initial announcement because they picked up on that fact. They had the chart below in their first press conference:

Yeah, I remember back in the early 2000s, seeing speed tests from people in South Korea in the hundreds of Mbps while I was sitting at home with like 5 Mbps at the most.
