post your resume with identifying info redacted

I will tomorrow. My friends told me the layout is too basic and garbage so I want to change how it looks before posting it.

Also I'm worried people will be able to identify my by searching the paragraphs on my resume, because my resume is public online

I appreciate all the advice btw.
I'm reading everything and taking it in.

I'll apply to more places on Indeed after I get people online to critique my resume.

Dude the worst thing you can do is waste time. The longer you go unemployed the less desirable you become. Going 6 months without a job is the kiss of death.

I'm doomed as it is. I can't get internships anymore because most want you to currently attend school and any job I apply to won't hire me for a month at the very least since the interview process for these companies takes so long.

I know I was doomed the moment I couldn't get a job back in February.

I don't think my chances are any higher now than they will be in 6 months.
Or maybe you're right, I'm making a lot of assumptions

Oh another thing. Do you write cover letters? Thats another thing our engineering team would use as a starting point to filter out candidates. If people didnt bother writing one, they didnt bother interviewing them. There were just too many applicants so they had to start somewhere to filter them out.

Actually theyre right, the longer you go without a job, the less desireable you look and the more people you have to compete with each time a new batch of new grads appears.

Youve only applied to 3 jobs since February, am I getting that right?

Is this guy serious? Complaining about 65k? Saying he's doomed but only applying to 3 jobs? Really?

I applied to like 40, man. 3 online.

I went booth to booth, introduced myself to the companies, handed them my resume personally and got 2 emails back from 40 booths lmao. I assume the rest just threw my resume in the garbage.

The reason why I'm doomed is because my resume doesn't make me stand out in anyway. My only chance was getting an interview after meeting face to face.

I won't be able to win anyone over with these stupid github projects :|

But yeah, I guess I'm being extremely pessimistic.

Yeah, I didn't write cover letters. I guess I will now, I didn't realize I was supposed to. What's the point of a cover letter? To show interesting/enthusiasm?

Complaining about 65k?

According to Indeed

$81,676 per year
The average salary for an Entry Level Software Engineer is $81,676 per year in Los Angeles, CA,

81k is the AVERAGE for an ENTRY position in software development in my city.

65k is the bottom floor

I never said I wouldn't work for 65k. I would gladly take a 65k entry job.

Job fairs arent everything. You need to be applying online. I graduated with an EE degree and went to so many job fairs. I got nothing out of them. I also got discouraged and gave up for a couple of months. I started working as a customer service agent. It was the worst job ever. It motivated me to kick things into gear. I wrote thoughtful cover letters and started applying everywhere online. After a few weeks, I had 2 offers.

And yes, write cover letters. Dont write generic boring ones. Point out your skills that match the job description and explain why youd want to work for their company.

Later on, you can get away without writing them, but as a new grad you have to stand out.

Another thing you can do is message the recruiter directly on LinkedIn. Just ask about your application status after a few days. Or let them know you applied and are super excited for next steps. Anything to get them to pay attention to you.

Dont give up. Set a goal for yourself to apply to a few jobs every week. Its a numbers game.

Hes not complaining. Hes pointing out that hed accept a job that pays below market happily, just to get some experience. $65k sounds like a ton but on average, new comp sci grads in CA make about $80k out of college.

ok so you applied to 3 lol

job fairs are good to go to but they're not the same as applying online. a lot of companies that go to job fairs arent even hiring, it's just more of a PR thing.

i agree with Applebees Ice Cream Master JMO here. you submitted 3 online applications and are acting like you have exhausted all job opportunities, plus you're whining about making 65k (which is like 15k higher than the median salary in the entire nation and is a nice salary anywhere but the bay area)? cmon dude

The bold seems about right. I know people who got 6 figure jobs and people with great internships who have told me they can't believe how easy it is to be successful and I'm just like...

lol

I think you have to be a special type of go-getter person to actually make 100k at your first job.

Nope, you just need to get hired at a big tech company. Got more than that when I graduated, but I had a masters. It also depends where you're working, if you're in the bay area your salary is going to probably be much higher than it would be in Kansas, but costs are much higher it's much less of a difference than you might think.

Did you graduate from a good school and get good grades? If not those are the obvious things that would hurt you, or if you didn't have any internships or aren't taking interviews seriously. If any of those are true, aim lower and get some experience first. You can always change jobs later for something that pays better.
