so at the end, how did rey hold her own against kylo ren when they were dueling?

like, the latter had been practicing lightsabre-ing for what i imagine was a good portion of his life, but was beaten out by a scrub?

even finn held his own for a while too

did they ever explain this, or was it just an example of awful writing

He got shot once by the goddamn bowcaster which earlier in the movie blew away stormtroopers and sliced once from Finn.

There are lot of things you can use to explain the situation. Whether you want to accept them is up to you.

Kylo Ren: Just very recently wounded from being shot in the chest. Visibly trailing blood and pounding his own wound. Also in a very emotionally unstable place due to having just murdered his father.

Rey: Grew up pretty much alone on a desert planet, a scavenger, and presumably having to fight for her life on the regular. She's skilled in the staff, which, I grant you, is not the same as a lightsaber.

Finn: Was trained on the Riot Baton as a stormtrooper, like all the rest. Again, not quite the same as a lightsaber, but still melee combat.

Rey's a broken prodigy Force avatar who is the greatest Force user that ever existed and ever will exist in the future, of course she has the innate ability to pummel Kylo, who is the real scrub, not her.

Plus, scrub Kylo was disabled by a Chewie bowcaster bolt and he's a wimp who can't even build a properly functional lightsaber.

Frankly, I was more surprised Rey didn't chop him in half in the first 10 seconds of their tussle, but I guess you need a comic relief villain who pretends to be important for the later movies.
