I was here before the Xbox launched, when it was announced even. The consensus around gamefaqs was that it would fail.

I don't blame anyone who would think that.

Hell without Halo maybe it would have.

I remember some gaming magazing I read claimed the name meant that it was a console/PC hybrid. I knew literally one kid who thought that was a good idea lol.

I dunno where they got their info though. Turns out Microsoft actually did their best to keep peoppe from associating it with PC's, lol.

Depending on when those rumors were published they would have been accurate for the time.

At one point the Xbox (Or xBox at the time named after Directx) was gonna be a bunch of different OEMs handled by companies like Dell. I guess pretty similar to what Windows Mixed Reality is now. I think this was around 1999.
The CEO of Dell actually told them why this wouldn't work
"When you understand why my stock price goes down when I drop the price on a PC and Sony's stock price goes up when they drop the prince on a PlayStation you'll understand why I have no interest in your proposal"

Right after this was when they started their big huge X looking console.

Eventually the Xbox team decided it wasn't worth using Windows 95 on it. This is what made a lot of people in Microsoft flip out originally.

They fully intended to make a PC style console originally. If the rumor was in 1999/2000 it would have been accurate.

A lot of my friends in middle school liked Xbox. Now that I think about it, I was the only dude I knew had a gcn for a while

I dunno if any of those kids ended up liking the system or not, as I didn't really hang out with most of them. My inner circle was mostly Nintendo fanboys, and I was a Sony guy myself. It was more that terrible hybrid idea that was unpopular.

Same. Middle school thru early high school, everyone I knew was into Playstation and later Xbox, and Nintendo became "lame". It really wasn't until my senior year when I found a circle of friends who still liked Nintendo games.
