Should gay and straight people not play each other either? What about if you're not from the same country or culture as the character? This is a stupid thing to be mad about. Christian Bale can only play a Welsh man going forward.

People tend to make dumb arguments like this one without acknowledging that unlike Welsh(/White) roles and straight roles, there is a severe lack of gay and trans roles in media. There is no shortage of accurate, good representation for straight white people in Hollywood. That is not the case for other groups. We have so few trans characters in media that are played by actual trans people, that people in this topic cant even think of one ftm trans actor.

I mean... at the end of the day... Eddie Redmayne as an able bodied person played someone who was horribly disabled and Hawking himself said he played the role perfectly.

To me some of these critics are literally saying that Hawking is wrong and that that role should have went to an actor who is disabled instead.

I understand and appreciate how this is a role where transgender people could have seen representation. It SHOULD go to someone who is transgender. But it shouldn't go to someone just BECAUSE they are.

Except people still think "trans woman=man in drag and it's an act" and movies portray them as such by having male actors. Then there's the fetishizing aspect of it. People at least believe "oh this guy is in a wheelchair and thin, they're probably disabled."

It harms and upholds harmful and false stereotypes about trans people. Until being trans isn't some major call for alarm and concerned prayers and moral panics, it's beat that we at least cast an actual man as a trans man instead of a woman being cast as a man.
