The Romans weren't a democracy, and Athens was only a democracy for like 20% of its population.

doesn't speak much for the republican model of indirect democracy if it collapsed into an empire lol

indirect democracies tend to form hierarchies of authority rather than remaining flat and dependent on a mandate from the masses

Yes, they were a republic. Not a democracy.

But the Romans were much less democratic than we are. They were an aristocratic republic.

Not sure if your comment was directed at me.

the roman republic was never designed to be like the democracies we know today

for instance everyone in rome was segregated by net worth and divided into classes and the wealthiest classes had disproportionate amount of power when it came to voting for the consuls

Athenian democracy is possibly even more alien, being a form of direct democracy

though there are probably some parallels you could draw between them and us right now, like the dangers of demagoguery

Kind of a lame comparison really. At times the number of Romans who could even vote were less than 1% of the population

Yeah it's a lame comparison.

Roman voting put you in blocs. All the popr were in a few blocs while the rich and powerful were in several blocs. The votes of the poor were essentiallh worthless. And altogether voters were an extremely small minority.

It's not comparable at all to the representative government where one man has one vote.

The wealthy and powerful exercise disproportionate influence in every society. Not sure why this surprises you or makes comparisons to rome relevant.
