I like using an arcade stick for 3D fighters such as Namco's Tekken and Soul Calibur series, but when it comes to games like Street Fighter and some of the SNK fighters I prefer using a d-pad. I think it might be because I grew up trying to master those games with my Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and PS1/2 controllers, playing with an arcade stick just feels clumsier and slower for me. Like, I know how to execute the specials so consistently with the d-pad, but using the stick just feels off for me.

Yeah. But not all D-pads are created equal. I've never done an in-depth comparison but if I had to pick a "best" controller it would be the original non-dual shock PS1 controller. Worst would probably be the Dreamcast.

Yeah, I try to force myself to use the stick for 'authenticity', but I almost always end up using the D-pad instead.

Oh for sure. The Xbox 360 controller was probably the worst IMO, the Dreamcast d-pad functioned fine enough but the controller was very awkward to use in fighting games, it was really designed with 3D games in mind. I had a Saturn to Dreamcast controller adapter that I still like to use to this day, the Saturn controller is probably my all time favorite fighting game controller, it is pretty much perfect for the job. The X1 controller feels excellent and the PS4 and Switch Pro controller are hard for me to complain about. Overall it feels like they have this gen covered pretty well.

I like using my arcade controller for novelty, but to be honest, sometimes the rotational moves are easier to pull off with D-pad, since I know where I'm beginning, and where I'm ending. And it feels like it's a lot faster on D-pad VS a big arcade stick.

It's harder for me to use a D-Pad than stick

Charge specials and Supers tire out my thumb extremely quickly

those charge supers like guile's somersault or zangief's 360 are super easy with arcade sticks.

guile's super used to give me blisters on d-pad >_>

I honestly enjoy the arcade stick for just about everything that was in the arcades besides games like Street Fighter. It is only games with that really technical demand for quick and precise inputs that throws me off.
