It all comes down to one important thing:

Who fucks up the most when the Nextbox and PS5 gets announced?

This is really what's gonna decide it.

I think the leader tends to be based more on price and marketing than brand or even games tbh, so yes

Literally this. Microsoft majorly fucked up when they introduced the Xbox One. It could go either way.

Sony has the potential to fuck up more if they keep ignoring crossplay and BC.

I don't think we'll see any $599 or Online DRM from either of them however.

No. Xbox is garbage.

Let's just go back to the good old days of Nintendo vs Playstation, before FPS games were popular

Hell, going back even further, Sony fucked up with the reveal of the PS3 after they dominated with the PS2 and drove customers towards the 360.
Nintendo fucked up with the N64 driving people to the PS1
Atari fucked up and drove people to the NES

The leader only changes when someone fucks up. If they both act smart, Sony will just retain the status quo, like when PS1 and PS2 led consecutive generations.

I would say 360 dominated its generation... at least until the very late years.

The Xbox brand will never find appeal in the Japanese market.

I think we can see some steps being made for next gen from them to get a decent idea

Microsoft
- I think they will want to have the most powerful console again. Or at least the better visuals for games
- Will likely launch with everything the Xbox One already has. So Gamepass, EA Access, 4k enhanced games for OG Xbox, 360 and Xbox One titles
- Halo Infinite will probably be crossgen like BOTW
- Look to be aiming for a 2020 release
- Will likely be getting their new Santa Monica studios, Playground and Ninja Theory to start making launch games right now
- Will most certainly take advantage of this crossplay stuff for games like Fortnite and Minecraft
- Probably going to angle Starfield for marketing

Sony
- Some of the upcoming announced Sony titles could be crossgen. Death Stranding and TLOU2 to be most likely candidates
- Will probably not have any PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP/Vita BC. Might have PS4 BC
- Still unclear what will happen with PSVR (BC, new model or nothing?)
- Probably going to angle FFVIIR for marketing

Hopefully they both bring it.

Ease of development was a major benefit for 360 developers and why that platform was so strongly supported. Hell I think this is why the Xbox gets Western third party support regardless.

Seems like Rare expects the transition to next gen to be easy.

"As [next-gen] starts to become a reality, we'll be working with the engineers in Redmond and figuring it out. They'll be architecting it in the right way, like they did with the [Xbox One X]," said Sea of Thieves producer Joe Neate. "I have all the confidence in the world that [Microsoft is] going to make that transition as smooth as possible for everyone."

Sea of Thieves developed by Rare

Neate says that he believes the transition to the Xbox One X serves as a good template for what he and other Xbox developers can expect when the next-gen Xbox comes out. "The transition to the X was as smooth as it gets. Normally when you go from console generation to generation, like, everything fucking changes and you have to rewrite everything."

However, based on the Xbox One X, Rare says the engineering team at Microsoft are "very forward thinking" when it comes to their hardware project. "I trust that team to get that part right and we'll do the Sea of Thieves part right and when the parts need to meet then they will," concludes Neate.

Sony is probably going for something similar. But I think the Xbox One to One X stuff was handled way better than PS4 to Pro. So it'll be interesting to see how all of that goes down.
