The most common tactics for Brock in Yellow were either to grab a Mankey on Route 22 or get Butterfree who could use Confusion. The Nidorans could also learn Double Kick IIRC.

Yeah, I've been defending LGP and LGE because I don't mind the intermediate step between ultimate-casual and mainline games, but that's a bridge too far. Let kids and newcomers figure out the rock-paper-scissors on their own, I was able to make my way through most of (all of?) Red when I was in first grade just fine.

Hopefully they at least change it to a suggestion or there are difficulty modes.

It prob has to do with fixing the difficulty curve. Brock is the first gym leader and if you didn't get squirtle or bulbasaur, he was the toughest part of the game lol

I think the main problem is that Masuda is underestimating children these days, because he feels he's in constant competition for their attention with smartphone apps (which isn't exactly false). Because of that, the games have been getting far more streamlined and simplified in order to maintain their attention.

Pokemon itself is just a weird world anyway.

Consider the job descriptions of the just the people in the image:
"You, guy. Stand at the entryway and don't let anyone in who can't curbstomp my pokeymans"
"Okay, you two ladies stand there, and there, don't move and face forward all day, and wait for someone to enter your line of sight."

And that's not even considering the people who hang out around incomprehensible fencing, facing one direction all day, apparently for fun.

Again, these games are not intended for children. The intent is to bridge Go players over to the main games (which won't work because bridge games never do), and the average Go player is very much not a child.
