The hype surrounding it pre launch, then all the issues it had after.

The game had so much more potential.

ET for Atari 2600 literally broke the entire industry with its failure. Yeah, it may have just been the straw that broke the camel's back, but it's hard to argue any other single game had a worse failure. It literally nearly doomed home gaming altogether

I hear this a lot but how does that work? Was Atari the only video game company in the world or something?

Were players like "that ET game was so bad that I will never play abother game again"?

Were the other developers like "Oh man that ET game makes me ashamed of my job"?

Market saturation.
The market was flooded by consoles, console clones and games. Game developers closed because of unsold games so the stores had to put more and more games in the discount bins because they couldnt send them back and they were taking up space, thus losing money.
Home Computers started to be a real competition.
Clone consoles you say?
Consoles made by third party that could play competition software. It is like... Bethesda would release a Bethesdabox that could play all PS4 and Xbox One games without paying a licensing fee to Sony and Microsoft. Or Sony releasing an addon to the PS4 that allows it to run Xbox One discs.
Anyway, developers lost money because the market was flooded by games so nobody bought their games, retailers lost money because they had tons of stuff that didnt sell and hardware producers lost money because you could play their games on competition hardware, it was really bad.
And then we got ET. Atari paid 20-25 million for the license, which was a huge sum back then, and Spielberg demanded that Howard Scott Warshaw would make the game, because he had done the Raiders of the Lost Ark game earlier. Warshaw used to spend 6 months per game he made, but he needed to make this game in 5 weeks because of Christmas sales. Spielberg even hated the concept of the game when it was presented and wanted something like Pacman instead, but Warshaw continued with his vision. As you can expect, the game really needed longer developing time, but Christmas dictates sales.
The next problem was that Atari couldnt count. They produced 200% more cartridges of the game than it existed Atari 2600 consoles. And while it was the best selling game simply because of how popular the movie was, it still had tons of unsold copies in stores.
No sane retailer touched a console after that.
And thats why the early Nes consoles were bu dled with ROB, they saw it more of a toy than a console.
