I personally find it difficult to relate to it. I wish I could understand more and be empathetic but I can't see the reason ending it is the answer.

Especially when you have young children to bring up and especially when this is your only life with one chance.

Why not at least just run away and move away. Try and start again.

Not all your problems can be fixed by running away. Sometimes things like these simply come from within.

More often than not it's related to mental illness that wrecks a person's perspective of reality.

Anthony Bourdain's suicide was a complete stunner though.

Eventually you just get to point where everything hurts on an emotional level and you become somewhat numb. Then suicidal thoughts go from being unnerving to peaceful and comforting. Just the thought of suicide feels good when you're depressed. Then the person decides to take the plunge and do it.

When it comes to having a family, suicidal people often times do it because they feel so unhappy and worthless that they honestly believe their family, even the children, would be better off without them. That they're a hindrance due to some trivial or arbitrary failure.

This is obviously irrational, but mental illness is not exactly rational.

I can agree with this also to add. It makes it sound to me like they are not able to correct a problem or a path so they take the easier option than go through the issues and deal with it.

i want to emphasize that 'dealing with it' in context is more to the tune of 'living with it'

everyone has to live with something. i think of the things i have to live with and conclude: 'yeah, I can live with these things.'

Sometimes it feels like everyone around you even those you trusted the most and loved turn on you (or they actually do). Sometimes there's no silver lining to anything. Sometimes the only thing you have to look forward to is watching as everything you ever loved slips away and there's nothing you can do about it. Sometimes you've learned that "it gets better" isn't true and "it only gets worse" is true.

For many people, they often feel some great "loss of status," or that they've "lost their place in society." It goes back to what Darkman said about being able to live with something. And having one's entire social position torn out from under them can very quickly cause serious mental distress and become something the victim "cannot live with."

It's a similar reason to why people who are bullied can be susceptible to suicidal thoughts. It can come with the sensation that you have no place among your peers (who make up your immediate "society").

I'm not suicidal now but I've made multiple attempts. Came very close one time, things started to go black but the rope came undone.

As someone who has had such thoughts, it was very much tied to my social and societal role, or my perceived lack thereof. I couldn't see myself as being worthwhile to anyone, of use to anyone, connected to anyone. I certainly wasn't responsible for anyone.

Things have come into my life in the last decade to keep those at bay, but they never really go away forever.

For me it was a mixture of having lived 20 years with psychosis and depression, then being sexually assaulted (more like rape), physically and mentally abused by a woman I loved. Just got too much to deal with. I've moved on a lot now and I can see the things worth living for.

When you feel like no one really cares to help you, says they do, but really don't put in the effort into showing you love and affection, it gets to you after awhile.

From what I seen, it is as darkman explained, problems without solutions. Sometimes these problems are so pervasive and troubling that the afflicted cannot find a solution for them, and decide that life is to bad to continue with them.

It's not always depression either. Anxiety can drive a person to harm themselves as well. Not talking about the anxiety you get before an interview or a first date, but the crippling type that only leaves when you sleep.

Anxiety plus an impulsive personality can be a disaster.

Apparently, 46% of suicide victims were diagnosed with some sort of condition prior to that. So It's probably safe to say that half of them have tried getting help.

and its only going to get worse, enjoy an entire generation of children raised by strangers in day care centers because mom & dad both work 50 hour weeks.

of course we will continue to erode families, the social fabric of our society, and then wonder why we are all stressed & depressed all the time.
