that said the soviets won their nonaggression pact in the pacific by kicking the shit out of the japanese

japan was fought on a shoestring budget by the US

85% of german casualties were on the eastern front

but a lot of the USSR supply line was supported by american-manufactured trucks.

The commonly agreed upon turning point of the war between Russia and Germany happened in the winter of 1941.


historians debate this to some degree. kursk (1943) was arguably a more significant victory than stalingrad. stalingrad broke german momentum, but kursk broke the back of their entire military doctrine.

but you're absolutely right that overlord (1944) was not a determinator in soviet success in the east. if anything, it was an effort to stymie overall soviet gains of influence post-war.

Ww2, the Germany was ready first, British and french forces weren't ready, as were the Soviets and Americans. Nobody was ready for the hideki tojo either, he banzai'd the hell out of people.
