Scientists from several teams on several continents are working toward the resurrection of the woolly mammoth. Well-preserved mammoth specimens are popping up all the time, preserved in the permafrost of the Russian tundra. Mammoths, most closely related to Asian elephants, went extinct about 4,000 years ago, which makes the probability of obtaining workable DNA much more likely.
