If Mexico places a tariff, that would rise prices in their country.

Many countries produce steel and aluminum. It's not exactly a rare resource.

Has the US been checking it's quality? That's what we should be asking.

Ford would consider buying more Mexican-made steel for its factories in Hermosillo and Cuautitlan as long as it met the automaker's quality standards.

MEXICO CITY/RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Mexico is emerging as the preferred choice for investors in Latin American steel making as a landmark energy reform and exposure to a U.S. recovery help outshine regional rival Brazil, where the gloom of recession has taken hold.

While steel executives in Brazil, Latin Americas biggest economy, call ever more forcefully for market reforms, Mexico has pushed through a major energy overhaul and other reforms which are expected to lure billions of dollars in new investment.

Demand for steel, a building material used in everything from cars to pipelines to skyscrapers, is a bellwether for economic strength, especially in manufacturing.

Steel makers Altos Hornos de Mexico and Ternium are well placed to take advantage of better growth prospects in Mexico, while Gerdau SA is seen as the best Brazil bet, given its strong presence in the United States.

Well okay then.
The lesson here is that steel manufacturing is not coming back, and it's just plain misguided to punish every other industry in a desperate and futile attempt to bring it back.

Are you admitting tariffs are a bad thing? Or is it just bad when other countries do it, but great when your cult leader does?

I've never supported tariffs, dude.

I'm a Libertarian.

Who wins with these tariffs? So far its a lose-lose scenario and both parties are playing a game of chicken. Am I missing something here?

Blaming this on all parties doesn't make sense. None of this would be happening if Trump wasn't an xenophobic moron

No one rational thinks this is anyone but Trump's fault. The other countries are just retaliating, which ends up being a lose-lose scenario.

It's "art of the deal" tactics, which actually makes Trump a paragon among politicians:
1. Start with an absurdly ridiculous position.
2. "Negotiate" down to what you actually wanted.

This is nothing more than a long-game to undo NAFTA.
