https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2018/05/23/lawsuit-alaska-muslim-prisoners-being-given-meager-food-pork-products-during-ramadan/

[The lawsuit claims] inmates at the Anchorage jail observing Ramadan are being given dangerously meager meals, including being served bologna sandwiches containing pork.

The DOC says the bologna was made of turkey and the department is making every effort to accommodate the religious practices of Muslim prisoners.

The Alaska lawsuit, filed Tuesday, asks for an emergency injunction that would force the DOC to change its Ramadan dietary policy.

"To the best of our ability, in accordance with Islamic law, we are providing our Muslim residents the opportunity to succeed during Ramadan," Edge wrote in an email.

Okay wait, why is "Islamic Law" being 'practiced' in a jail cell to begin with??

I think it's more about not violating their religious principles, which includes the kind of foods they can eat.

They'd probably complain about cakes being served to inmates, and argue that being in jail should revoke your cake eating privileges.

It's not so much meager meals. It's fasting from dawn to sunset. Iftar is usually a standard meal.

The American government doesnt need to accommodate the dietary needs of prisoners unless its a matter of health like being allergic to something. You lost your right to practice your religious dietary needs freely when you wound up behind bars, youre in no position to demand the government to cater to your specific needs, youll get the same food every other prisoner gets.

I cant prove it because Im expressing what I personally believe how it should be, I dont know the actual law behind religious dietary needs and how much responsibility prisons have to accommodate those needs. If you know please share the data, it seems it hasnt been decided by courts yet whether prisons must bear the responsibility.

To my knowledge, it's all or nothing. If the state accommodates some religious dietary caveats in prison, then it's obligated to do so for all religions within reason. If it doesn't provide for any, it's not necessarily obliged to provide. I'll scope out Westlaw real quick.

To an extent being the key here. Does accommodating religious dietary needs fall into that category? I guess well see what the courts say

Numerous federal circuits have held as much, and this is just a half-assed glance at Westlaw. See:

Nelson v. Miller (2009)
https://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1362058.html

Cotton v. Cate (2014)

LaFevers v. Saffle (1991)

Tl;dr, the state needs a compelling state end to justify deprivation of capacity to practice religious tenets. For example, beard length restrictions are okay because of the safety risk of shit being hidden.

You ever read the Bill of Rights?

this gets lost once convicted. prisoners don't have the same rights as a free man. proof? prisoners are not allowed to carry guns and can be searched at will at anytime without a warrant.

edit:

amendment 13

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

so yeah....slavery is legal as a form of punishment when convicted for a crime.

this

you're in jail for committing a crime.

you are there for two purposes:

1. serve time for being a criminal
2. proof through good behavior why you should be let out anytime soon and be given a second chance. sometimes even let out early if you can prove you are not a criminal anymore.

so short of a food allergy, get yourself, serve your time, and stop pretending anyone has to give a shit about your personal requirements to live.

don't want to live in a shitty jail cell for X number of years? don't be a felon. it's that simple.

Why the fuck do people think this shit is a good idea? Like, groups like ISIS use this shit for propaganda. Prisons have been serving kosher meals as long as I can remember. Why can't we just fucking treat everyone with a little dignity and stop acting like anyone from a different religion or race needs to be punished for threatening some ridiculous vision of purity?

Like, fuck, let's drive a bigger wedge between people and help send people into the arms of extremists instead of completely eviscerating these organizations by treating the people they appeal to with respect and getting them to support us.
