Why do I need to talk it over with my family? They're not financially responsible for me and I'm not for them.

Obviously I would think hard about it being financially feasible. Isn't that a given?

Not everyone is cut out for trades, yall. Theyre mostly very physical jobs and thats not for everyone. And theres really no logic in doing something you dont have a passion for just because it might pay a little better.

We certainly need plumbers and roofers, but we need librarians, too.

Because it's similar to my previous degree and it's a positive customer service job that is closely related to public service and I think it would be a good career for me. Literacy is important.

Mostly the people who aren't grasping the concept of "paper keys", i.e, degrees enable you to get different positions and that every job out there is a viable one. If a job no longer has a needed purpose in society, that job dies out. Librarians still have a purpose and that sort of degree can be applied to other jobs as well, like a records custodian or a historian when combined with the right experience.

I agree, to a degree (hah), but the chances of experience and a recommendation beating out a Master's is slim to none. Depends on the field as well though. Art or music versus chemistry, you dig? One can be accomplished by one's own merits, the other doesn't really lend itself well to self-taught methods.

I've just finished my master's degree in health information management and I'm staring down just under $56,000 in debt (some from vocational classes, some from my BA, most from MS). I knew it was a gamble going in, but I saw this as the only thing I could reasonably do that would give me a shot at a reasonable wage. Unlike my BA, I actually have a career goal that the MS might help me achieve, and if that doesn't pan out then there are other uses for it in the field.

I'm on a 25 year repayment plan. That comes out to roughly $480 per month, $240 per paycheck. I absolutely need to make at least $3 more per hour in order to make this plan of mine work out. HR is keeping an eye out for positions that might accommodate both my requirements and my new skills. Failing that, I've got a good amount of experience and a master's degree that should get me something somewhere. I can tread water for a little bit once the loans come due.
