I have to fly around and visit different hospitals to work on equipment for my job. I travel a couple times a month for 2-3 days at a time. I schedule my own work so its not too busy, I usually get some downtime each day. Its exciting trying new cars to rent and seeing new places. I have a frequent flyer status with Air Canada so I get to skip most of the bag check and security lines, get better seats on the plane and board before most, and access to exclusive lounges at The major airports with free food and beverages including beer and cappuccino. I have Executive status with National too so I get to just walk out on the lot and choose whichever vehicle I want. Once I took a convertible 5.0L Mustang even though it was completely impractical with barely enough room for my tools and parts. Ended up taking it on a ferry to Vancouver Island. I collect Aeroplan points with my travels which I can spend on whatever I like. My travel expense policy doesnt cover alcohol though.

The perks are pretty sweet but I can see it getting old if you dont get downtime or have to come home to go straight back to work at an office or whatever. Luckily when Im not traveling I work from home mostly, and dont have much to do. Im gonna ride this job out as long as I can lol.

The travel benefits are awesome. For instance my company lets us upgrade our seats up to $140 more if it's a >3 hour flight. I did a round trip to St Louis and both ways I got an entire row to myself, with enough legroom to stretch out and a free drink. Plus I have a travel credit card so it's like 3x points for free.

However, you have much less of a social life at home because you're away. You can't have a dog if you don't have someone to watch it and it can be straining on a SO. I imagine I will get sick of it after a few years but I only travel about 1x/month.

Well I'm single and travel is only for 3 to 4 days at a time, and it's not a regular thing beyond this training I'm doing now.

Worked for a company that literally clawed back per-diem change. Their perdiem was 10 bucks a day. Which amounts to like, nothing.

Whatever, they're failing, reap whatcha sow etc

$10 isn't enough for a single entree that's not fast food. How could anyone get by on that?

I only travel for work 2x a year so it's pretty awesome. I go to Vegas most years for a week long convention that us really just an excuse for my boss to reward me. He comes too but we have a blast together.

This year's second trip is to Pittsburgh, Kansas though which I didn't know existed. A potential manufacturer is located there and theyre sending a private plane for me. I've never been on one so it's exciting.

I've traveled extensively for my job over the past ten years around the world. The only point of advice I can offer is try to set aside a few hours for yourself while you're there to take in some of the local flavor. There are places I've been where I didn't do that and I regret that now.

So I had an interesting conversation with the senior manager here...

She invited me to lunch and asked me what it would take to get me to move down and join the team here. I said a salary increase, a promotion, and pay for my move. She said she'll see what she can do.

Erm I mean I'm OK I guess, apparently our client loves me and I led the big yearly project earlier this year, and I'm the most senior member in this role on my team.

The office down here in SC is kinda in a up the creek with no paddle situation that could work in my favor.

I don't think they're going to offer me the salary I want. It was an OK offer but I like the MD area and I want to make sure I've exhausted all my career options here before I take such a big risk.

The forest training episodes are so gooood. Deku is such a boss. I had chills with him and the others teamwork. Seeing them progress is awesome. The story is starting to get a bit philosophical and the intrigue surrounding that is great.
