been going to the gym for a few years now am pretty built but it was achieved through diet and absolutely no cardio

put on more weight than expected this winter so i decided to start implementing cardio after my workouts and wtf i feel like a fat kid on the fuckin treadmill. been running a mile or so every other day and i'm lucky if my mile times are sub 12 mins. it's TERRIBLE. i can only run for a few minutes before needing to stop (used to smoke a lot, not so much anymore. vape tho) and then i'll walk for a bit but then my running stamina is shot and i can only muster running for a minute or so at a time.

anyways when the fuck does this get easier? how do people run marathons???? i try to implement good breathing techniques but i can't do it for more than a few seconds before panting.

i love lifting weights and always considered myself healthyish but you know what i was fuckin wrong. i always though keeping a high BPM during weights was good enough but now i see it's fuckin not. any runners here have any good tips? i'm pretty committed to being able to run at least 3 miles without stopping.

i'm looking to implement other forms of cardio. i'll be biking to the gym from now on (~6 miles total).

or just do some yoga before or after. there is a chance you may have some tightness if you truly love lifting weights and have no endurance. If you don't want to do yoga, do some stretching if you aren't already. This is an addition to actually slowing increasing your distance, as others have suggested

You have to force your endurance to move. Increase the distance you go bit by bit each time. Dont overdue the speed. It will move quickly if you push a little farther each time.

Honestly I would ditch the treadmill if possible.

The quickest way to increase in cardio is to do intervals. Run for 30 seconds, walk for 1 minute, fine and repeat. If your neighborhood has light poles you can use them to mark your run and walks instead of time.

Or use a track. Run the straights, walk the curves.

Since you are just picking up running I would start walking and then build your pace up. Don't immediately start running or you are going to burn yourself out after 3 minutes.

Took me about a month. Also I never smoked so my lungs are kinda up there in value.

Maybe its your shoes? Posture has a lot to do with me having a shitty run.

Forefoot runners master race.

I recommend going to a local mom and pop running store and they'll do all kinds of measurements and little exercises and ask you questions in order to narrow down the search for your perfect shoes. Shell out a pretty penny on your first pair and then once you get an idea of the kind of support (Neutral, Natural, Stability, Motion Control, etc.) and the amount of offset that works best for you then you can just buy them for cheap on 6pm.com. You can get a great pair (Asics, Saucony, New Balance) for $50 - $70.

Good luck, the best part about just now getting into running is that it's only going to get better from here.

I don't remember when it got easier, but it did definitely take a while. And then it was suddenly easy. A ton of it is mental too, it's really easy for your mind to decide you should walk for a bit when your body could just run all the way through. Once you stop once it gets that much harder to keep going.

I got up to 10 miles easily before my old man knees crapped out on me.

Never stop and take a break while your on your run. You need to push yourself through it TC. One day likely soon itll be like your body had an epiphany and youll be running faster/longer and enjoying it
