First off, kudos to these girls. I love seeing students accomplish innovations like this, and I'm really proud of them. I hope they have a bright future ahead.

Now, here is what I see as part of the problem. These girls are the ones who introduced their race and gender into the mix by mentioning it in this tweet initially:
https://twitter.com/Mmmikaylaaa__/status/988555577386262528/photo/1

I don't really see why they deserve any special acknowledgment for that, since their accomplishment stands on itself. But once you open the door to "vote for us because we're black and female," you are opening the door to people voting against them for the same reason. There was no reason to ever bring identity politics into this in the first place.

None of this excuses the idiots at 4chan in any form, BTW.

Lmao, you can't rationalize this shit. They didn't open the door for anything.

thelovefist posted...
I believe it is possible to think this: 4chan is a cesspool and this situation is just further evidence of that.

And also ask this at the same time: Why did these girls feel the need to bring up their gender and race unsolicited?

You're seeing the latest in a long line of scenarios where Admiral finds something negative to say about a black person or their behavior, which inspires another group of posters to call him out on it. At this point, it mostly just feels like they're competing to out-troll each other.

Him, FrisbeeDude, TC....they're all enablers and instead of marking posts/threads and/or ignoring (using the site's function or just restraining themselves) posts and posters they think are trolling. But when it comes to race they continually engage these threads and posters to 500 post threads and then whine about this place being overrun by trolls? And then making the occasional race baiting thread, knowing what the outcome will be. Why? Because they like the attention too.

A person's race is irrelevant to me in whether I think the behavior is worthy of being criticized or not. The users attacking me are of the mindset that any criticism of black people in certain cases is picking on them and is unfair or racist. A lot of their perceived racism is also projection. I criticize white people just as often, and I defend black people when I believe the issue is on their side (these posts usually go completely unacknowledged by the folks here losing their shit, BTW).

And to clarify my positions from my first post.

1. I'm proud of these girls and think what they achieved was amazing. I'll add that I'd love to see them win.
2. The users on 4chan who tried to screw with the polls and who attacked them are idiots. There is no defending them.
3. These girls unnecessarily made their race and gender an issue when they mentioned it in the post asking for votes. They added an element of identity politics that was not needed and shouldn't have anything to do with this competition.

There is nothing wrong or racist about pointing out #3.

But I still think you like playing up this shtick whenever the opportunity strikes, because I've seen you make posts that include some criticism of a black person's behavior more often than I've seen you criticize a white person's behavior, and absolutely more often than I've seen you praise a black person's behavior without finding a point to criticize.

I'm sure it seems that way because topics in which I criticize white people or defend black people don't get any acknowledgement, whereas topics like this get 200+ posts and stay on the front page all day.

For example, I defended Tamir Rice and Philandro Castile in those shootings, and no one said a word. I criticized these racist white frats guys weeks ago and not a single person quoted the post:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/76532405

So yeah, I'm not surprised it "seems like" I criticize black people more when this board only loses their shit and makes a big deal about that, while ignoring all other comments of mine that don't fit into their narrative.

Minorities and women often get overlooked when it comes to any kind of achievements, particularly in science. Now a group of minority women have achieved something that's caught the attention of NASA. That's why they point out their gender and and race. It's no different than when a kid does some amazing shit and people list the age along with the achievement.

This is exactly why he gets so much shit for the posts like his first itt - everyone here has been around long enough to notice the pattern of bias. And the bolded part here, I've literally never seen him do that. Every compliment he extends to a black person come with a huge asterisk next to it. That's pretty funny, because if this were a group of a white boys who wanted people to vote for them over their black female competitors based on their race/gender, I doubt you'd think people criticizing them were trolls. In fact, I'm quite positive you'd be the first to call those boys racist.

While your original notion is logical I believe this is where you went wrong. You are comparing apples to oranges. Women and minorities in the sciences is something noteworthy and potentially inspiring. White males are not.

There is nothing wrong with simply bringing attention to that either. If you claim opening that window was fair game, then it must also be fair game when the window of sexism/racism was originally opened which lead to the noteworthiness of all this to begin with.

You cant blame a sex or race for making strides and stating such. Its merely an observation. Any advantage this gives them is secondary and wholly at the discretion of the voters who use that fact as they see fit.

Agreed!

But I feel you are saying that as if it invalidates the fact certain people faced more challenges having their accomplishments succeed than others.

- Noteworthy accomplishments.

- Success in fields where your demographic has struggled.

Two different things. But I appreciate you taking me to task to ensure I was aware of that too.

I don't disagree with you at all here. I actually would like to see them win because I think more female and minority role models in science would be great.

However, this is still a competition. The races of everyone involved are not supposed to have an bearing on the winners. So when the girls mention their race in hopes of gaining an advantage, that is fair to criticize.

If these girls end up winning and their school wants to promote them because they're female minorities, I have no issue with that. But they should win because they had the best invention, not because they pushed identity politics to get an edge.

And, from a practical matter, the picture of the girls is already included in their tweet. Any voter who is likely to give them an edge because those girls are minorities already has all the info they need. These girls don't need to deliberately put a spotlight on their race and gender beyond the obvious.

That's correct. There are plenty of black kids who grow up in nice middle class neighborhoods in stable, loving families. There are also plenty of white kids who grow up in poor, broken and abusive homes.

We have no idea what their circumstances are. That's why this group identity crap and acting like the fact that they're black must mean they overcame hardships which makes their accomplishments more impressive is absurd. Judge people as individuals, not on their group identities.
