The problem with the chain stores is that they probably have to adhere to certain price structures. The other pizza stores in New York probably couldve gotten by with raising their prices, but not Papa Johns.

If corporate couldn't make an exception like they do for 90% of the major chain stores in Hawai'i (including Papa John's), then that's on the CEO.

What exceptions? Link?

Pretty much all pizza prices in Hawaii are one or two dollars more than the national advertised price.

You guys get a 9.99 take out for dominoes? We get 11.99.

Try to order a large pepperoni from Papa John's in Vegas: $15. Hawai'i: $21.

Also, it says right on their website that prices can vary by location, so that's not a big factor for Papa John's at least.

That's because everything in Hawaii is basically imported from the mainland. It's been like that forever and it's not to compensate for raising minimum wages.

Just pointing out that there was nothing stopping the stores from raising their prices.

Theres more to things than just jacking something else up to compensate for a loss.

That though most likely crossed the franchise owners mind. After a cost benefit analysis, figuring things like competition, he decided to shut down.

Likewise in other areas they will likely raise prices. It doesnt mean there wont be an overall negative effect. At the end, you end up with the same damn purchasing power.

Economics 101. If you make a commodity artificially expensive, you discourage its use. Leftists understand this when they want to understand it, like when they call for carbon taxes.

It's not like other pizza places are closing down. Papa John's simply isn't making a product people are willing to pay for. It's their fault.

Inflated labor costs hit the most vulnerable businesses first.

Clearly they aren't very good at running a business if an increase cost kills them completely.

That isnt really always true. It often can be but doesnt have to be.

This. Why the fuck are you buying Papa John's when you live in New York State, TC.

For that matter, why even have McDonald's or Jack in the Box there? Why have Panda Express when there are much better Chinese restaurants?

I could go on and on.

Wasn't there a point where they only needed to add like .10 cents to the cost of a pizza to give all their employees healthcare and refused? Obviously they'd rather close than treat their employees half decently.

Plus Papa John's is garbage anyways, especially for being in New York.

A good (read:smart) business will simply replace all of its employees with automation once it's viable. This will happen. It will be interesting to see what the CE critics who are making fun of Papa Johns will say then.

Their profit margins are razor thin as it is. Increases in any cost mean either prices go up, or stores close down.

Which is still only a problem they are having. Other pizza places are still in business. They have a poor business strategy and are blaming anyone but themselves.

This is one person in one city.

Give me statistics on all pizza places in Rochester and then we can talk. Also future statistics till 2020, when minimum wage matures.

Remember, he's one person. If he decides one day it's not profitable, he has the power to shut down. Also remember, franchising is basically like being a small business just with a big business name.

Also, they'll likely be bought out by others, so they are probably just closed temporarily.
