This. I dont have enough time to play video games at home to deal with the constant download updates. When you only devote a couple of hours a week for gaming, updates kinda screw you.

Back when you based your purchase on how the boxart looked and a broken game continued to be broken unless they fixed it and released it on a new cartridge which you had to rebuy if you wanted it fixed?

I dont think I ever owned a game I could not play to completion. This must not have been very common.

I only play a console game once or twice a month. So almost every time I do, I need to wait 10-20 minutes for a stupid download.

Suppose you want to rent games from Redbox. Ive rented games on PS4 where the first day of the rental is entirely spent downloading the update so you can play the game eventually.

No games are broken. Todays gamers are a bunch of spoiled children and if they cant get past a certain part of a game then they demand a patch because clearly its the devolopers fault and not because they just suck at playing games.

They're about the same I guess but Mainstream "Triple A" games were way better when I was a kid.

Back when they were games and not just attempts to get you to buy Microtransactions and 5 different special editions.

rant incoming:

besides microtransactions/patches/etc - the thing that really changed with games today IMO is how most modern games are over-engineered to be something to everyone.

so this means that most games now tend to feel "same-y." most games share the same few mechanics, regardless of genre, storytelling is the same, pacing is designed to always be consistently stimulating, difficulty is designed in a way that nothing is ever truly challenging, etc.

this is nice for someone who isn't really into games because they can pick up the new Tomb Raider, Zelda, God of War, etc and it's an easy transition over to a new game. No real investment in terms of time or learning is required.

the downside is that games now feel very soulless and corporate. i think for a lot of older people, the spirit of what made games so compelling was that there were such distinct differences in games and everything wasn't perfect; games weren't designed to be stimulating at all times, they didn't always hold your hand, some bosses were easier or tougher than others, there were right and wrong ways to do things, etc.

all of this adds personality and nuance to games that are mostly missing these days. now it's gotten to the point where you find a game that embraces these imperfections (like Dark Souls) and it is universally praised.

in short, back in the good ol days it felt like you could "beat" a game, and now it feels like you just experience them the same way you experience a Disney World ride or something.

I feel like people that hate on modern games only look at what EA, Activision, and possibly Ubisoft produce and judge the entire spectrum of gaming on that. There's still tons of fantastic games out there that don't have tons of hand-holding, aren't a games-as-a-service model, and don't require a ton of updates (seriously, what are you guys playing? Only sports and mulitplayer games usually get that many updates). It's like pretty much every entertainment hobby out there, the vapid, most mainstream stuff will be the most talked about, you have to look around and underneath all that to find the good stuff people don't talk as much about.

Having said that, I think the PS2 era was the best.

Why's it disingenuous to call out people who judge games by the name of the property and not by the merits of the actual game for nostalgia blindness.

But there are a 100 times as many shitty indie games for every good one, it's fucking difficult to sort through it.

No one here is saying there aren't any gems though. Yes, these indictments are more of mainstream companies but that's where the production quality is, that's where the other people are if you're into multiplayer.

i know, that's why i goes middleware and indie now

the last AAA games in the few years late i find interesting is hitman, dishonored and prey.
they have the options to turn off those shit and still provide good level design that's fun to figure out yourself.

I wouldn't say it was at it's best when I was kid, but I think the best era of gaming started with the the sixth gen consoles (ps2) and ended at the eighth (ps4). "AAA" games today are becoming more and more defined by risk aversion and a lack of passion and creativity, where there's more interest in finding new ways to get players to pay more money for less content than actually creating innovative and unique experiences. The games industry as it is now is almost unrecognizable compared to where it was even just a half decade or so ago.

Not a year in my life of gaming has gone by without excellent games to play.

You just need to know what you like and have an open mind.

Sure some games have been "not for me" but that's just life.

Lmao your username good job i laughed.

But games were better back then. We had times where we all would bring our controllers and play goldeneye together lose or win we never had arguements because it was fun. Now a days games specially xbox 1 and ps4 looks like movies with limited game play. Nintendo has kept the tradition of games being games and not a fucking cgi movie and is the reason i still own a nintendo wii that's plugged rught next to my ps4 pro.

Games were much more magical and mysterious when I was a kid. There was always rumors about secret codes and rare findings. Of course damn near every one turned out to be bullshit, but it was still something that made the game more than it was.

The internet ruined that experience.

With that being said, I still think that todays games are a much higher quality than the games of my childhood.
