There was a new person coming in today. The name said Yao and they wondered if it was a boy or girl coming in. I said there was a basketball player name Yao Ming a few years ago so I think Yao is a male name. My coworkers said not to assume that and said I was racist for thinking it. Are they right?

Not racist. You could debate if it was sexist but it's not even that. The person just wanted to be seen being progressive and said something stupid. When Yao walked in you should have glared at the guy that said that

Also I googled it and there is a woman named Yao-Hui Huang I guess I lucked out with it being a dude.
