Heard one of my managers telling someone that a customer left a tablet, you know electronics......behind in a shopping cart and called to see if someone had found it. An employee did find it and told her it would be kept in a safe place for her to pick up later but when she came to pick up her tablet it could not be found and apparently she was very upset. I am not saying the store shouldn't compensate her for her loss or anything like that but just asking what you think should happen right here, do you think her losing the tablet in the first place should be any kind of a factor at all?

On a side note, don't in some third world countries and stuff like that sometimes stuff like this happens and just because some things should happen and people should be compensated for stuff, many times it does not happen

So someone who works there stole it?

Perhaps that person should be fired if caught.

Are there cameras that can be checked? Has the employee that spoke with her been identified, or are you taking the customer's word that someone found her tablet?

for a fact someone found her tablet and the tablet can no longer be found, just like i said. pretty sure they know who found it in the first place, don't think any cameras can be checked

So the store had possession of her lost tablet and now it's gone? Yeah an employee took it. Doesn't take a fucking rocketician to figure that one out. Fire everyone if no one fesses up.

That's too extreme and the store would suffer for it tbh.

Well who's really suffering here? The tablet. You know if a tablet goes unclaimed after 7 days it gets put down?

If the tablet is lost, security (or the store's management) needs to interview employees to find out if someone took it (my guess). If an employee took it, fire the employee.

This, except maybe the fire everyone part. If the store has taken ownership that an employee had found it, and said they would put it into a safe place, and now the tablet is gone, then it is the store's fault. The store had possession of it and was supposed to have kept it safe.

If it's lost, likely an employee took it if it can't be found, and that is for the store to deal with, but the customer is owed compensation.

That's up to the loss prevention/security. I'm not an expert at that, but I think the store would need to make an offer to the customer to see what will appease her. They would likely take information about the tablet as far as how old it was, what the condition was, etc and make a determination based on the value, the size of the company, what they're willing to compensate her, etc.

Depends on whether they figure out who took it.

Well the store made a mistake in the first place telling them the item had been found but not securing it
They shoulda known an employee would be tempted to take it
Or literally anyone in the store

They should compensate her with like a $15 gift card for the inconvenience
but if she expects a replacement tablet she's out of her mind

you think expecting a replacement or something for the value of the tablet is insane?

She probably should be compensated in some way. They did tell her they had it and made her go all the way there just to tell her its gone. And if an employee stole it, that's kind of a big deal. I think it wouldn't be as bad if the store never came into contact with it at all.

On the other hand, its the lady's own fault she lost the tablet in the first place. I get it, shit happens, pain in the ass all around. Best case scenario, they find the tablet, give it back, and maybe give her a small gift card.

I'd say it depends. From what we know now, then yes, a little bit. Its not like the store confiscated it from her, she accidentally left it there. Its her fault she lost it.

If an employee stole it or something like that, well that's a bit different. I'd wait for more information before forming an opinion personally.

Then either they found nothing on the cameras or they are hiding something. But I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Yeah
They didn't take it from her, she left it behind
At that point the store just has to make a reasonable attempt to get it back to her
They're not obligated to replace it or anything, especially if they can't prove an employee took it while on the clock

and even then the employee would probably get the slap, not the store

But once the store has admitted that they had possession of it to the customer, the store is the one that is responsible for safe keeping it.

It would be different if the customer called saying she lost her tablet and no one could legit find it. It wouldn't be the store's fault. But once the store admits they have possession of it, tells the customer they will keep it safe, and then "loses" it (ie, most likely someone took it), the store has now lost the woman's tablet, and they owe her more than just a $15 gift card in my opinion. Maybe not a brand new tablet or the value of a brand new tablet though.
