Why not pay the guys flipping your burgers at Wendy's the same, if not more than people who went to university for 4+ years learning in demand and complex skills!

It just makes sense!

They deserve a good life too! They were born after all, weren't they!

Let's not, but let's also not pretend there aren't a ton of people in this country willing and in many cases actually are working full time and still not able to get by. Surely you can agree that something is wrong with that?

No I don't agree. It's up to you, the individual, to make yourself useful to society. You don't see me opening a shop to temper knights' armor and complain about not getting enough customers. Manual labor is losing it's value in society as we become more knowledge and service based. If you want to succeed you need to adapt.

while $40/hr is a bit extreme, the general sense of "hey I went to school and don't want to make the same as people who didn't" is the wrong way to look at any wage increases

It entails you've got some skills or knowledge that makes you useful beyond manual labor.

well sure, but you should be happy other people are making more money and how you now have some leverage with your employer (if min. wage is increased to $15 and you are stuck at $16, you can tell them to give you a raise or to fuck off cause you'll be able to find a job easy enough)

I don't want a pay increase, but it's this treatment of customer service employees as being lesser humans that is really irritating and why you see so many of them complaining.

I would throw it back and say that I'm the one making your food for you since you were too damn lazy (or incompetent) to cook it yourself.

You know damn well not everyone can be an engineer, and there are plenty of jobs that require a piece of paper that costs you roughly 4 years and thousands of dollars to obtain that shouldn't.

There are plenty of flaws with the American job market

I want to know what would happen if minimum wage was determined by inflation. We wouldn't have to worry about constantly changing it every several years/decades, and the economy itself would dictate the wage. Curious as to what @Darkman124 has to say about it since he actually knows how the federal reserve works with this kind of stuff.

Hard to say for certain what would happen over time, but most likely the fact that we didn't do this is partially responsible for the strong upward trend of the investor class's share of the wealth, and the downward trend of the working class's share of the wealth.

I can say it wouldn't cause inflation itself, because fiscal/social policy doesn't do that. Money supply does that, and the fed controls that via printing and interest rates, something they can easily control.

I expect the larger fear is that it would spike unemployment, as many jobs have salaries that hover just above minimum wage, and are subject to the constant specter of automation.

to offer some pre-emptive answers, had we done this 20-30 years ago i expect we'd have seen automation technologies prioritized sooner.

economic growth tends to occur via creative destruction and sometimes the fallout lands on a specific subgroup while enriching others. though it almost never hurts the investor class. the rich generally win.

Can you imagine if it was the other way though? If the poor always won?

What if, and I may be going out on a limb here, we raise the minimum wage some because wages shouldn't stagnate, but not to the strawman whatever crazy amount people make up to shoot down the idea for some reason.

I also don't know why people focus on the minimum when plenty of people making above that want to see the floor raised because they are also bleeding money and making less than their forerunners.

Maybe we need to rethink society if making sure people can support themselves will destroy it. I just want the minimum to be just enough to get by independently. As it stands, making more than minimum isn't guaranteeing you safety and status quo.

I wonder what it would really cost to provide every adult a small studio apartment, basic medical care, and 2000 calories a day.
