Also, is there a really accurate personality test that helps decide?

Make a list of every job you can think of and start ranking them and crossing out ones you don't want to do.

It's a big decision. Take your time and really think it through.

yeah. I should've said that a teacher and I are trying to put together a project for students that will give them time to consider what they want to do and experience it.
I still don't know what I want to major in but I definitely have a couple choices I want to research :S

I went into the counseling office at the community college and they told me I would have my associate's at the end of the semester and asked where I was transferring. I hadn't thought of it, so they told me to go into teaching. What an idiot.

This but don't expect every class to be a blast. Sometimes things will get boring and you'll wonder whether you're on the right track but just stick it out... unless you're absolutely sure you're going to hate it

Well, at first I wanted to become an engineering major. But then I realized that I hate physics.

Then I realized that I liked math more than most people. So I went with that.

This, but don't go down the liberal arts road because of it. You're still more likely to get hired into a position unrelated to your degree, than with a liberal arts degree. I went to school to be a Gunsmith, and ended up a Design Engineer. A friend of mine tried to get into a similar position as me with the same company with a liberal arts degree and ended up taking a position about 3 pay tiers below me. Employers like to see that you dedicated your education to something in particular, even if that something isn't what they're hiring for. It shows you can make up you mind and get it done, rather than him-hawing about what you want to do with your life.

The whole 'not in your major' thing is very true. I studied music. 200 freshmen, and 9 of us graduated (and we were the largest music major class to graduate)

I did use my degree for about 10-15 years, but when it came time to settle down, finding a job that payed as well as playing abroad just wasn't happening.

I went back and got my associate's and became an engineer. I got insane job offers with my associates that I never did with my bachelor's or masters.

The fact of the matter is - if you know where you want to live, your local community college's programs will tell you what the job market is like in that area. They wouldn't survive giving degrees in fields that won't produce local employment.

Same.

The fact that it paid well was a bonus.

How did you decide what to major in in college?

Me? Path of least resistance. \^.^/

My parents had absolutely insisted that I get a four-year college degree. But, they didn't care where, nor in what.
So, I just prospected around the different departments (after having likewise prospected around several universities); and then settled into the one which I had, in so doing, discovered to be (for me) easiest overall. ^.^

.

Certainly not the most lucrative-at-the-end-of-the-day approach, of course; ... but all in all, all things considered, it worked out okay for me.
And if I had to do it all over again, I'd do the same.

(well, after crying ;.; at having been made to do it all over again, that is.)

yeah the thing about a site like this is you ask most people on here what their interests are and they'll say "video games" or "computers" and they'll be pivoted into game design or programming when those might not be their thing

there's many other disciplines involved with those things
