Just the opposite; the sweeping reduces moisture on the ice and allows the stone to go faster.

The sweeping motion heats the ice up, making it slicker. Reduces friction, which causes the stone to travel a bit further than it would otherwise.

No sweeping keeps the speed up so the rock goes farther. Generally it also makes the rock go straighter, but there are sweeping techniques to get it to curl as well.

Oh so the object is to make it hit the center and you control it by cleaning the ice in front of it. Pretty interesting sport lmao.

No. You 'clean' the ground to melt the ice in front of the stone to lessen friction and reduce the rate the stone is slowing down, preserving the stone's speed.

There's nothing you can do to slow/stop the stone once it's going, besides letting it slow down on its own.

This is all true plus it also prevents the rock from curling. The greater the friction the greater the curl of the rock.

Yeah, the closer to the center the stone is at the end of the round, the more points that stone is worth.

Not quite; each stone is worth a maximum of 1 point. You get a point for each stone that is closer to the center than your opponent's closest stone.

Nah that's not how it works.

You receive one point for each stone of yours that's closer to the center than your opponents.

For example if you have two right in the middle and two on the outer ring, but your opponent had one in between the all, you'd only get two points.

Edit: dammit, ninja'd

What? No.

The team with the stone or stones closer to center than the opposing teams stones get that many points once the end is over. For example if you have 5 rocks in the house and 3 of your rocks are closer to the button than your opponents rocks, you get 3 points.

You could have all 8 rocks in the house and still get no points if the opposing team has a rock closer to the button.

That's actually a valid strategy if the area around the button is a mess and you have a strategic need to clear the area.

If aimed well, a strong shot can take out 3 or 4 stones at once, though it usually gets knocked out of the house as well.

It's perfectly legitimate, but generally that's a move for earlier in the round since it's hard to get such a shot to stop where you want it to.

If it hits the back wall it's disqualified iirc, so you only want to do it if it knocks out an opponent

How the fuck did curling get invented

The same way any other sport got invented. Some people made up a game for fun, it got popular enough to catch on to the point it got official rules, and it stuck around.

How specifically? Probably some drunk Scots were sliding rocks along a frozen lake and one was like I BET I CAN HIT THAT SPOT O' THE ICE BETTER THAN YE

I don't know if I could be disciplined enough to be a curler. I'd be too tempted to throw the stones hard AF every time just to knock shit all over the place.

Commentator: We're not sure if this guy knows how to play; he seems to just want to cause chaos with his turn. It's a bold strategy. Let's see how it works out for him.

There is a line behind the house and if the rock is fully behind that lime then it's out of play. It is also a good strategy to knock an opponents stone out while not staying in the house. If there are no rocks in play at the end then it's a blanked end and the team with hammer (throwing last) maintains hammer.

South Korea's women curling team are so adorable, I love them. They all have ponytails and glasses. And they're all nicknamed after breakfast foods like Sunny and Choco and Yogurt.

Based Japan please make anime of them.
