If you've been playing them a long time, I might be asking the wrong person but I'll shoot.

Is it hard to get into? I've heard these games are notorious for the amount of grinding and upkeep required. Is it as bad as I've heard?

No. You should get it digitally so you don't have to swap games out cuz you're gonna be going back to this game all the time if you're like me

Its not hard to get into at all. There are a few difficulty spike monsters but other than that its fairly decent difficulty wise.

The challenge/fun is finding a weapon you click with. Then finding more to click with. Thats what has kept it fresh for me 200 hours in.

what you should do is buy a psn card online and get it digitally. No need to walk/drive anywhere!

The new one is by far the easiest to get into. They ease you into the new additions and quest structure without being too slow. Grinding is only there if you want specific weapons/armor since they require a certain number of each material. But you generally get enough just fighting a monster once or twice, so grinding isn't too excessive. And the thing about World, is that yes you can repeat fights to grind gear, but so many fights play so differently unlike previous games. One time I was swinging across vines at the top of a tree to kill a Rathalos, and another he was chasing me through a forest then he got into a fight with another dragon mid chase (so it essentially became a 1v1v1). World is super dynamic.

And worst case scenario, if your armor isn't the best you can just call up some help from someone else online (it pulls from EVERYONE playing the game at that time so there's plenty of people.

As for upkeep, if by that you mean having to play consistently, the only thing you miss are the weekly events, which are cool, but not a deal breaker imo. There's a lot to MH regardless of how you play honestly.

I legit don't feel bad about killing any of the animals or creatures or monsters. Some people do, though and I can understand why.

Monster Hunter World is the most noob and casual friendly version of the series yet. It is very easy to get into and has tons of weapons that balances out and will probably fit your playstyle. SO far it is the easiest version of the previous version IMO but still incredibly challenging and fun.

There is grinding. Some armor requires a specific material that's very rare to get from the monster. I legit slayed Anjanath like 10 times and still didn't get its fucking Gem like 2 weeks ago. But there are special mission that gives you better chances to get rare items. I don't see it as grinding. Fighting the monsters is the CORE of the game and it never gets old to me. The grinding isn't as bad as MMORPGs where you legit have to spend hours upon hours killing mobs just to get .01 EXP.
