He is defined by his pacifism. He formed a peaceful village with like-minded machines and helps out the Androids. Near the end of the game, his village is targeted by the overlord of the machine network, most of his villagers die and the survivors flee to the abandoned factory. His hand is forced and he takes the fight into his own hands in order to defend the remaining survivors. However, due to his own teachings, the survivors had committed suicide out of pure fear. Pascal had taught them fear so they wouldn't run into danger, have a sense of self preservation, etc, but the fear was too much for them in this case.

If you wipe his memory instead of killing him when he asks, he will be selling the limbs and hearts of children in the ruins of his village when you run through as 9S

Velvet in Tales of Berseria is probably the most psychologically tortured character I've ever seen. Just the starting backstory she has is already grimdark enough to jumpstart 2 and a half comic book superhero/anti-hero backstories, and that's before the story's even really started.

And I don't mean this as even really a compliment. It kind of just seemed over the top/comical to an extent eventually.

Yusei Karin from Luck Stealer.

Born without the natural ability to produce luck, and only survived by having her mother die in her place, and her father constantly stealing people's luck to the point where they die due to it, and transferring that luck to her.

Literally so unlucky that she would be dead hundreds of times over if her father didn't steal enough luck to kill a person every other week or so.

In my experience, Zenith from The Wayfarer Redemption series.

That author had a penchant for creating shitty characters who very slightly redeem themselves and get their way, and really lovable characters who get absolutely mauled.
