Cold clean air or warm polluted air?

I got the idea for this from a while back when a buddy and I were sitting in a car one dark morning, waiting for a store to open. It was freezing, so he turned on the car's engine and the heater. I told him to turn it off when I got dizzy from inhaling the exhaust fumes. He insisted on keeping the car on, saying that breathing in those fumes is a small price to pay for not freezing. I disagreed and would rather breathe clean air, but what would have been the better thing to do? We had to wait another half hour before the store opened, so would you rather have waited in the cold that long or just turn on the heat?

Why are you getting dizzy from the car's heater? That's not normal unless you're inhaling direct from the exhaust pipe

Because the car is not moving, and the fumes are collecting in the same area.

Unless you're in a confined garage or the car has an exhaust leak, this is a non issue.

I'm saying that if you stay in one place for a long time (e.g. 30 minutes), the fumes are going to seep into the car regardless.

What was the actual temperature and how long were you going to need to be in the car? I need to know these things to determine the chances I freeze to death
