I'm trying to level up but these wolves get me so close to death. I feel like I missed a bunch of stuff because one of my swords is broken and I didn't know you could get better gear.

Newbie fighting algorithm for Witcher 3 (200+ hours in the game)

Use potions/oils prefight if you have them then:

1) Use Quen and engage enemy
2) Wait for enemy to attack > Dodge
3) 3 quick sword slashes > disengage > back to step 1

-generally speaking, you wanna roll dodge monsters, and parry/block humans.
-actually use your potions, oils, and decoctions as much as possible. make a habit out of it early. they are very easily replenished so you don't need to hoard them for a difficult boss encounter or anything
-spam quen
-when you run into trouble that you really can't force through, like your werewolf situation, just leave, progress your character with other quests or exploration, then come back to it. he isn't going anywhere.
-level up your basic light and heavy strikes to max damage asap, remember to EQUIP THE ABILITY PERKS YOU BUY
-red mutagens when you unlock the slots for a decent damage bonus, pair them with red perks
-spam quen
-get a witcher set of gear (bear, griffin, cat etc) asap
-if there's a red skull over an enemy or quest, you definitely don't want to attempt it until later
-spam quen

for that first werewolf fight in particular, you want to kill his helper wolves asap obviously so you can focus him (they can be hard to see but they are there) then use fire or silver bombs to incapacitate his health regen. then just circle dodge, fast hit, circle dodge, fast hit until the second half when he goes rage mode, then go all in with heavy attacks and back dodges until he is dead... or just come back in a few more levels and decimate him with a better silver sword.

Fam, I JUST finished this game today. Remember that you can press the right analog stick to follow the enemy. Let it attack you and dodge with circle. Then attack and move. Before initiating the fight, use Cursed Oil on your blade (he will always draw the correct blade on his own)

Try to brew the swallow and thunderbolt spells as soon as you can. Potions and blade oils are the key to winning. ALWAYS start off with the Quen spell (which deflects a few blows). I wouldnt mess around with bombs.

The R3 tracking thing is essential to mobs of underwater or flying enemies and quen can be your best friend. Also, only sell items to their corresponding merchants and always check their inventory for treasure maps or alchemy recipes (swallow, thunderbolt, white raffords concoction, and ... theres one that increases vitality.

I recommend putting some skill points into alchemy and be sure to search every ? in White Orchard to get extra AP from Points of Power.

Anyways, the werewolf is fast and hits hard, so quen for defense and Cursed blade oil for attack. Dodge, slash a couple times, and then roll. Rinse and repeat. Holding L2 helps, too.

Make sure you're repairing your weapons and check the beastiary for their weakness. IIRC the werewolves regenerate health unless you use a specific bomb on them.

You can also stunlock werewolves with Axii.
