Most of the ones in my high school were nerds, but about 30% of the NHS population consisted of giant douchebags and annoying nerds who made sure you knew what their GPA was

finally the minority were kids whose parents had to bitch and moan at the staff to include their student in the NHS - i recall one kid got caught cheating, was kicked out, and his mom made such a big hullabaloo about it they just reinstated him, causing the leader to quit because he has integrity

what a joke society tho they don't really do anything ours just took school funding for a trip to malaysia that was supposedly philanthropic in nature

Our NHS kids were the really nice ones. There were a ton more that qualified academically, but didn't want to do the required service hours. Because of that, no one was really impressed by their membership.

I don't even think my high school had one, but my middle school did, and all these super arrogant and snobby kids were in it. I didn't join it just to avoid them.

The "cool for being smart" clique was completely and utterly insufferable.

Yep. I was invited to join it in my senior year, but I didn't want to do the application for it. Seemed too unnecessary.

I think the people who were in it were the people that my high school would've expected to be in it. The smart kids everyone knows, the STEM program peeps, the honors kids, etc.

Pretty much the usual nerdy, rich, church-going type kids.

I had all the advanced classes with them, but I absolutely refused to do volunteer work, so I didn't bother applying for NHS. Think I was in the junior version in middle school though.

I guess the NHS kids were just random student with good grades and attitudes. Being smart is one thing, but youve got to represent your school in a positive manner.

That said, they usually sent girls to represent our school because most of the guys were either bad or weird.

My grades were mostly good (... fuck too, chemistry!), but I didnt have the right attitude.

This right here is part of what is wrong with America... boys are being disenfranchised.

I agree, but its the truth. I was in a pretty small school, so our NHS was basically a study-group of girls whod known each other since preschool. Studying and community service were just excuses to get together, but I cant argue with their results. They studied together so hard that we had co-valedictorians.

It's in line with a lot of what I have observed myself... like my middle school's NHS was mainly females, the few males in there were in the "cool for being smart" clique and were also mostly Asian, not that it should matter but it might have made them more cliquey.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe the NHS appeals more to girls than guys because of the common concept of masculinity and the idea that "school is for fools"

It's not because the school was discriminating, it's because guys are less likely to try because they want to do other things probably and being in NHS is like a huge i'm a nerd label

Consisted almost entirely of kids who were addicted to Adderall or cocaine. The ones that were on Adderall eventually graduated to cocaine.

All but like two of them are now massively in debt, have a drug problem, or are dead.

We did. I was in it.

It honestly wasn't a big deal. We had about 140 kids in my graduating class and I would say 50 would get in. If you had the grades and did one extracurricular and did one community service thing in the past 2 years or so (you could get inducted as early as the end of sophomore year, but very few kids got in after that), you were almost a lock to get in. Then you'd just do 30 service hours a year the next two years, 8 of which the school automatically gave you, and you'd throw it on your college application.

As far as breakdown, my school wasn't incredibly diverse, but most people in it were full of themselves and liked to act like they sat on a throne. Ironically, our valedictorian and salutatorian both WEREN'T in it.

What about what I said is remotely unbelievable? Its not like I claimed to have been a member. That may raise suspicion, but youre a fucking bigot if you dont think that girls arent just as capable as boys. Obvious what you meant there.

It's a long discussion, but I think that as a society we are failing to keep boys engaged in education, and I think the lack of positive male role models is a big reason for that.
