I don't understand how people don't wash there hair everyday. If I don't my hair looks greasy af and looks like garbage (not that it's great anyway but it looks terrible if I don't). Like I have to shower every morning or I look like a bum that doesn't know about the invention of soap

I'm a hygienic person who hasn't used shampoo or conditioner for 2-3 years.

I went through a period where I hardly went outside and took the opportunity to stop using shampoo, my hair was greasy for about a month before it started learning how to balance out the natural hair oils by itself again. Now my hair is always soft and I never have to worry about greasy hair on camping trips, staying over at a friends, etc. I can even skip a shower when I'm late for something/in a pinch and not have to worry about how my hair looks.

Water is really all your hair needs, but like I said if you don't have a month or so to commit to having greasy hair it'll be tough to kick the shampoo habit. Especially hard for girls, my heart goes out to ya'll.

Why shower and even shampoo hair every day?

It's gonna ruin your hair making your hair thin faster etc.

Gotta let your hair be ready every now and then.

I only shower once a month and my hair is fine for the whole month.

The only time I'll wash shampoo my hair at least two times a month is if I get really sweaty from working out or mowing the grass during the hot summer

Everything is a trade off.

Just because shampoo harms your hair in some way doesn't mean it's a net negative. It's certainly better than having greasy, smelly hair.

I don't shampoo and my hair isn't greasy or smells

However, I've been around people that do not use shampoo like they should and they fucking stink. The oil built up in your hair does not smell good.

Fair enough. But I think that's also possibly from not combing/brushing it too since that removes a lot of the excess, and spreads it out evenly so your scalp knows to make less of it. TBQH I feel like a lot of people underestimate the significance of brushing their hair...

I agree.

Some of it is technically "dead," as I understand it. But that doesn't matter, it still has to be maintained to be healthy. Think of it as the same way you would continually 'treat' a leather couch.

So I sell my hair and replace it with a kind that takes less work.

I wash my hair on most days with just water (though I'll skip a shower or two here or there). Only use a anti-dandruff shampoo 1-2 times a week for a deep clean. Have gone without for months before as an experiment with no ill effects (I do have short drier hair though). I've also cut back on washing my body with body wash/soap for the same reason, usually 1-2 times a week, but I'll shower without to scrub dirt with just water. People associate the feeling of clean right after the shower with cleanliness than than actual health. That said, its not an excuse to be a poorly groomed neckbeard. Still shave, trim, use pomade, brush teeth, floss, cut/file nails etc... It helps to have a good diet so you don't have BO (often diet is the cause, sweat itself usually is odorless).
