If its completely obvious their client is known for murders, why would lawyers sink that low just for notoriety and a bad record? It sounds pretty unethical to try and reduce a killers sentence anything lower than life.

Because even the lowest of human garbage have the right to legal counsel.

In cases where there is no question of guilt, I'd imagine a defense attorney would be more focused on keeping their client from getting the death penalty.

Yup. Now, it's all about getting the defendant to repent and bring in mitigating factors (like mental instability) to avoid the death penalty. There's always the insanity defense, but that rarely works and risks getting harsher punishment than just admitting guilt.

also, it's a very high profile case, so you can make a name for yourself.
