A lot of them just fight for life in prison and not the death penalty.

You cannot force someone to be their own lawyer, thus they are entitled to one. So there will always be a need for a lawyer, even if the guy is the biggest pos ever. Ever notice how nobody bags on the lawyers who have to defend these kinds of ppl? Because everyone knows it has to be done.

Also they get paid

And sometimes they get lucky and the prosecution goes for first degree murder and they can actually get their client off due to being unable to prove premeditation (see: Casey Anthony trial)

Ehhh... There's one pretty shitty defense attorney who said he'd have relished a chance to defend Hitler. But other than that you're right.

As someone in law school that person doesn't represent the ethics of most defense attorneys.

When defense counsel knows their client did commit the crime they focus on trying to find justice and creating rehabilitation for their client.

If you just send someone to prison for say 10 years that doesn't necessarily take care of everything. That person is eventually going to come out of prison and if they are reintroduced into the world either poverty stricken, still mentally ill or probably both then the chances of them recommitting a crime are huge. So most lawyers in that position just try to make sure that doesn't happen.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided. Court appointed lawyers don't get much of a say in their clientele.

A law practitioner from Reddit once said, "if a guilty man can be convicted on flimsy evidence and a half assed job by the prosecution, then the same can happen to an innocent man."

Another also answered when asked how he can defend a man who is clearly guilty, "my job is to provide the best defense I can for my client so even if he is found guilty, there is no recourse left for him to appeal."
