Just because we have the right to a gun shouldn't mean we have the right to decide when it's necessary to use one. The amendment says nothing about the right to shoot people.

Anyway, almost everyday so far this year there has been a school shooting in America. Maybe this is finally the year when something happens to curb this problem. I'm not saying I have an answer, but as a teacher this is something that hits VERY close to home.

It's absolutely disgusting how easy it is for someone to get a hold of a gun. Children are finding ways to get guns, what the fuck. If you're not a competent enough parent to keep your dumb ass gun away from your kid, you shouldn't have a gun in the first place.

Ever hear of something called the copycat effect? Basically when the media and whatnot report on these types of issues where people are doing it this makes other people more likely to do it too because "everyone else is doing it" its what happened with tide pods, and why news outlets dont talk about suicides.

Which means media talking about school shootings increases school shootings. Congratz OP your now part of the problem your criticizing.

Don't some states have stand your ground laws or something similar that basically say whether you're allowed to defend yourself?

Anyway, they should just hire military vets as security guards at schools. Three birds one stone - safer schools, vets get a job, and psychiatrists get more work due to all of the psychological evaluations they're gonna need to perform beforehand.

Or, y'know, start to develop strong foundations for children at young ages to try and circumvent possible anti-social behaviour. Mormon's have really strong family values, for example. Has there ever been a Mormon who shot up a school?

Yeah, this makes sense. I just feel like so many people use the 2nd Amendment as a blanket statement for whipping out their gun whenever they feel like it.

John Paul Stevens said we should amend the Second Amendment to

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.

(addition in bold). At least according to him, it's pretty clear from the historical record that the Second Amendment was added so that states would be allowed to have their own militias, not so that people could defend themselves (the latter being a right that apparently is so basic to U.S. common-law tradition that it doesn't need to be spelled out in the Constitution).

Right. If a state wants to create a militia that's maybe separate from the police and they have guns, sure. But your average Joe Shmoe doesn't need a gun.

Brandishing a firearm when not in designated places (IE a range) or if you are in need of it is illegal in every single state.

I wish my friend knew that. I still feel it's the misunderstanding of the 2nd Amendment that causes this. And the fact that the 2nd Amendment is ALWAYS brought up the instant guns are mentioned just perpetuates the nonsense.

This is technically correct but it won't go well for the individual most of the time. I did hear a story of a guy who won a lawsuit where he shot a cop or cops that illegally entered his home.

I guess it seems like too often people use the 2nd Amendment as a blanket that lets them try and get away with anything that has to do with guns.

*I should get to own a small arsenal of weapons in my house - 2nd Amendment
*I live in the country, I should be able to blast my gun off whenever I please - 2nd Amendment
*Someone walks up to me and starts talking shit, I should get to point my gun in their face - ^^^

And I understand that those things may be illegal, but folks are gun crazy and feel that the 2nd Amendment protects them under those circumstances, so they fight the law and raise a ruckus.

Every instance of disregard of an Amendment doesn't need to result in someone pulling out a gun and thinking they need to shoot someone. If police come to search your shit without a warrant let them. Let the courts then do their work.

Some people don't trust the justice system. Not saying they have a right to shoot anyone lol cause that's not what guns are for, but people don't trust the police right now
