Twisted Metal 2 had a much better story, both in presentation and delivery. Just take a look at, say, Simon Whittlebone's end FMV. Vigilante 8 doesn't hold a candle to that. However, Vigilante 8 has combo attacks, semi-realistic vehicle physics, and more interesting levels than TM2.

V8 has more appealing levels in that they are more interactive. I love the level where you can cause tidal waves. The vehicles are also more realistic in their movement and manueverability.

twisted metal 2 and black nailed down the best car combat controls and maneuverability.
v8 had the same problem that tm3, tm4, and others (like the star wars combat game) had, where the vehicles were either too floaty or couldn't turn well enough. it resulted in some really weird situations. also, the weapons weren't nearly as clean, with heavy reliance on homing to make up for the inaccuracy and weird animation/timing. twisted metal also had a way better stories for its drivers and the execution was better. tm 1, 2, and black all the way. --- Disclaimer: There's a good chance the above post could be sarcasm. Vigilante 8. Even though I prefered the cars from the TM series, the levels made that game so much more fun.
