Has the shooter been identified? Was he a student at the school?

Identified as Nikolas Cruz. Former student, he had been previously expelled for disciplinary reasons apparently.

So he was kicked out of school. Then he returned to that school to kill people. And people at that school were saying he seemed like the kind of guy who would shoot up the school when he was actually going to school there.

I really hope we start ditching this whole gun debate and start focusing on what is going on at public school from K-12. I mean, it could (also) be a parental thing...but come on let's look at the schools first and foremost.

The shooter isn't always going to be from that school, though. Neither Rogers nor Lanza shot up places they were attending or attended ever in their life.

Tribal warfare. Thats what identity politics is. No one wants a deranged gunman, who shoots children, to be associated with their tribe.

I agree with you that something bad is definitely happening with young people in this country. It's like they have no interaction with adults ever, instead they are stuck in these echo chambers of people their own age their whole lives. There is no community or society that these people have any part in except for these echo chambers of people their own age. I am guessing that since this kid left the HS, he has just been alone brooding over all the crap he went through growing up through that experience.

You put a resource officer in the freaking school. The reason people shoot up schools is because it's a target rich environment and there's nobody there with a gun to stop you.

I think a lot of it is the gun culture just isn't there in other countries compared to the US.

Nobody else really treats them the same way. To a lot of Americans guns are a part of their identity.

I think there is some truth to that, but I don't think that explains the mass shootings. I think this is a cultural/societal phenomenon. Like there were all these guns around in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. and there were very few mass shootings in those decades. Yet since Columbine we have had so many. I think Columbine was the watershed moment because it brought those two kids into infamy and introduced the modern media blitz mass shooting to the public.

24-hour news cycle.
Back in the 80s and before, such an incident would show up in the evening and late local news for at most two days, and maybe Nightline.

Just going off the Wikipedia list. Mind you, all these didn't result in deaths and weren't mass shootings, but:

1/9: A man shot a pellet gun at a school bus full of children, shattering a window. No one was injured.(I didn't count this)
1/20: A student was fatally shot on the campus of Wake Forest University.(Again, didn't count because it was college)
1/22: A 16-year-old male student fired at a 15-year-old classmate in the cafeteria of Italy High School in Texas. The gunman left the school immediately after opening fire.
1/22: Shots were fired from a truck in the parking lot of NET Charter High School, targeting a crowd of students during lunch time. One student was slightly injured, apparently from injuries unrelated to gunfire. One person was arrested in connection with the shooting.(Doesn't seem to be students who fired)
1/23: A 15-year-old male student shot 16 people in the lobby at Marshall County High School and caused non-gunshot injuries to 4 others. Two 15-year-old students died: one killed at the scene, another died of wounds at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
2/1: Two 15-year-old students, a boy and a girl, were shot and injured inside a classroom at Sal Castro Middle School, which shares a campus with Belmont High School. Three other people suffered injuries unrelated to gunfire. A 12-year-old girl was arrested and put in custody.

And then today.

Yes, clearly the problem is that we haven't accepted our new normal and learned to live around school shootings. All we can do is treat America like some third world shithole and walk around armed as we could be shot at any moment.

it could be a lot of things really. not having the culture is one reason. guns arnt seen as a means of defense in other places, but as a novelty and sport (and you are punished heavily for using them in such a way). with that you have a lot of social programs made to help people more than here.

here theres way too much emphasis on prescription drugs for everything. round the clock social medias constant coverage of horrible shit, twitters cesspool and just the internet in general that covers the whole spectrum of the first amendment and can pull people into bad places easier. lack of proper mental health signs and treatment. our capitalistic tendency's tend to create a wider social gap. throw in larger homeless problems, poverty, gangs, drugs ect. and its all a time bomb.
