There are several slight moments where Snyder copies lines or sequences of events but fails to recognize why Moore structured them they way they do. Rorschach's speculation about how awful the world is, reflects more on him and the lens through which he sees the world than it does about the world itself. And the book largely condemns him for his lack of flexibility with regards to humanitarian interests, where Snyder seems to martyr him. The metafiction of the comic (clearly obvious in the conversation between Rorschach and Ozy) is completely lost in the adaption. Were you to simply watch Snyder's adaptation of the book, I don't think you would understand why this book has captured the fascination of new readers for the past thirty years. --- Whatever happened to standards? Zack Snyder actually wanted to do a solo Batman and MoS2 before BvS but DC/WB execs forced him to rush to catch up. So he tried to cram all the shit he had planned into a couple of movies and they ended up being super long with huge budgets spent to film them and then literally hours were cut from what was filmed. Zack literally never had a chance. It was doomed from the start. That said, he also wasn't a great choice for a director as he's a huge fan of grimdark stuff--which was fantastic for Watchmen but not so much for Superman. Patty Jenkins had a much better idea, and I'm hearing a lot of really exciting things about Aquaman / Shazam. Zack Snyder actually wanted to do a solo Batman and MoS2 before BvS but DC/WB execs forced him to rush to catch up. So he tried to cram all the shit he had planned into a couple of movies and they ended up being super long with huge budgets spent to film them and then literally hours were cut from what was filmed. Zack literally never had a chance. It was doomed from the start. That said, he also wasn't a great choice for a director as he's a huge fan of grimdark stuff--which was fantastic for Watchmen but not so much for Superman. Patty Jenkins had a much better idea, and I'm hearing a lot of really exciting things about Aquaman / Shazam. Writing is typically a mix of what directors + actors want to see and you'll end up where they'll shoot multiple versions of the same story to see what comes out better or what hits it off with target audiences better. The goal isn't to tell a "good story" it's actually just to entertain the viewer which is why Marvel Movies do so well. They're entertaining to watch (For the most part. Thor 1 not withstanding). For example, in the original First Blood movie, in the book that it's based off of, at the end. ~~Rambo dies~~ Stallone heavily disagreed with this ending and complained up and down until he got the director to agree to shoot a different ending ~~The ending where Rambo lives and is brought in alive~~ When they showed the endings to two different test audiences, the book ending was universally reviled and not in a subtle way, either. You don't need to have a writing degree to identify bad writing, but it also doesn't make you qualified to produce something better.
