Star Wars has a niche fan base to begin with. when one comes around after a long time casual fans get excited then lose interest...Disney is planning to go star wars crazy over the next few years and those casual fans won't keep up with everything...the dip is to be expected.

Unless theyre nerds, then they stick with them far longer.

How exactly did they expect to keep releasing toys when the movies are so close to the same point in time in the same fictional universe?

A similar thing happened with the prequels. That first initial rush was crazy but soon the market was overloaded with shit like Jar Jar.

The Toys That Made Us documentary went into detail about it.

George Lucas probably did have the right idea to keep it feeling like a limited period. There's always gonna be this rush of interest when something dormant returns but it'll never last.

Not even just the movies, they also push out toys for Rebels and I believe they still have a series dedicated to Legends too.

It also doesn't help that Star Wars is filled with uninteresting characters that nobody really cares about that get made into toys.

On top of that, the price of toys keeps going up and kids are generally more interested in games which end up appearing cheaper to parents.

Looking it up it looks like it's not really limited to Star Wars. Despite the slump Star Wars was still the biggest selling group of toys last year. The Cars franchise was apparently seen as a warning sign that movie merchandise doesn't have the pull that it used to. When Cars 3 released the toy sales were way down compared to the previous movies. On top of this you have retailers like Toys 'R' Us closing down.

This article goes into a bit of detail about it.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-18/-star-wars-toy-sales-fall-in-2017-as-movie-tie-fatigue-sets-in

A part of me did wonder if kids are more into iPad shit than toys so maybe that's a factor for all of this. The adult collectors can only take it so far.

I wonder how Transformer toys are doing? The last movie flopped so I wonder if the toys did any better?

Probably a big reason why the new movies are so female-centric. They want to tap into the girls market, and a good way to do that is with strong female leads that can market toys. Disney isn't so much "gender empowerment" as it is simply "market development".

Look at how many female based toys were made for the entirety of the prequels. I think there was an Padme figure, and that's it.
Now look at all the female characters that have toys based on them. If red wasn't associated with the dark side, I'm sure we'd have a pink lightsaber by now.

Anyone with half a brain could see this coming. Every kid has a cell phone and a tablet nowadays and would rather play on that than with an action figure that will be missing an arm in under a week.

If the collectors I know are any indication (and they might not be, I mostly knew guys who were into GI Joes) then a lot of them are moving onto smaller, independent toy makers who allow for customization in toys.

they do. its a large fanbase yes but when content is pumped out as quick as its being right now it'll tend to lose some luster to everyone except that fanbase...and while large it isn't large enough to keep numbers high. You think the general public is going to be as interested in Solo as they were in the first Disney movie? Highly unlikely...it'll be watched mostly by that niche fanbase.

Then Disney ruins that in 2 years

Toys are just to expensive now. A star wars action figure at target is $20. I have an at st from the black series that originally went $60. The black series set of the main girl and guy and death trooper from rogue one was like $50 retail. I got a two foot tall tie fighter that probably retailed for $200 or more

For sure, they grossly overestimated the female market. They can jedi-mind trick the marketing execs all they want, but nothing compares to the buying power of comic book geeks and the disposable income they're willing to spend on geek merchandise.

Star Wars is still the number one toy brand for the holidays in 2017. It's just that it didn't push the toy company to growth like they expected.

Did the The Last Jedi didn't really have a lot of merchandise potential compared to The Force Awakens? What is there that's even new? The evil version of BB-8? The penguin things? Holdo? lol

I remember people excited to get that remote control BB-8 for TFA. I can't think of anything for TLJ that matched up. That dumb AR game?

i remember when i was a kid, star wars action figures were like...3-5 bucks each, and even back then my parents bitched and moaned about it.

i can't imagine parents today being willing to shell out like 8-10 bucks for a figure. i can't even imagine how much the ships must cost.

Star Wars always pushed the littlest shit and it somehow sold. If this was back in the day we'd have like four variants of Kylo Ren

It'd be like

Masked
Bandaged Face
Scarred Face
Shirtless

as well as like figures of a bunch of background droids and the chick carrie fishers daughter played that didn't say a word.

That's a big thing with it too. The assortment of figures from what I'm reading doesn't seem very good...

It was basically

Finn
Stormtrooper
Kylo Ren
Luke Skywalker
Poe
Rey
C-3PO
Chewie
Hux
Paige
Rose
Obi Wan from ANH
Yoda
DJ
General Leia
Jyn Erso
Luke Skywalker during the final fight
R2D2
Rey with a cloak
That alien pilot
Emperor Palpatine
Flametrooper

Like, half of them are characters you already would have gotten during TFA AND Rogue One. The rest are just uninteresting characters or re-issues from the OT.

They would maybe be better off if they *did* push weird shit like the Lucas family set. At least some shit that is different from the last two films figures.

IIRC the reason that there are a bunch of re-issues is because they've abandoned the idea of having a series for each film and now they are just releasing figures under the general "Star Wars" line

So it's supposed to be like a restart or something?

Basically it's another clunky execution on the part of Disney.

And I don't even think this is true. Maybe for Spiderman but Black Panther debuted in a previous MCU movie, and plenty of the other single hero movies are about relative nobodies that used the MCU brand to draw in more viewers.
