I honestly have no idea why hes so pissed st teacher

...I told you why, quite fucking clearly. Because the teachers I had growing up were cowards and bullies who enforced random shit and picked on students as powerplays, and got away with it, because they were teachers. Just like TC.

But like every other teacher, if it's not what YOU want to hear, you just fucking ignore it. Fuck you.

There are boat loads of terrible teachers and terrible schools. With 100% certainty I can tell everyone here that probably a quarter of all teachers are only there because they couldn't land their "dream job" and backed up on being a teacher. And they hate it.

This is like at my secondary school. You had the choice of a blazer or a waterproof jacket in the school colours, but teachers would go around giving the students shit for not wearing blazers. Even though the blazer was more expensive and the waterproof was given as a cheaper alternative. It was just as TC said; they were showing the kids who were in charge. It was bullying, plain and simple, but nothing happened because they were fucking teachers and nobody DARES challenge a fucking teacher in this shithole of a country.

You're just plain ignoring shit to piss me off now.

I would be intrigued to hear what constituted being bullied, and how they punished you if there was no wrong-doing.

I have 100% had to punish students who reacted to bullying as opposed to the bullies because I can only act on what I see and have proof of. Thus I tell every class I'm in not to engage with the antagonistic behaviour of others, because if I spot you retaliating, I have to punish you.

I think this is wrong. Do you think humans are ragdolls? If someone is being physical with you, you can't just sit there and take it until the teacher notices (which may not ever happen), and you can't expect kids to be little tattletales who run crying to the teacher every time someone starts to mess with them. That will just get them into even worse social situations.

Honestly, with my experience in the DoE - bullies are rarely punished until its too late

Look at that kid who killed his bully in the Bronx,

Part of it is the services available in dealing with bullies and how must public schools are stripped of that due to funding

Then theres the idea of punishing, I dont punish in my classroom, I use query to have students assess their emotions and understand what theyre going thru We shouldnt be punishing students

What was the grade and what was the name of a teacher that comes to your head - one who you hated so much?

It wasn't a "grade". It was all through-out Primary, from year 1 to year 7, with every teacher. I remember the deputy head teacher was the worst for it, constantly pressing down on me. And then the head teacher tried to get me into a bullshit problem child class to "help" me that did nothing because I wasn't the problem.

And it continued into Secondary until about Year 3 when I stumbled upon maybe the ONLY teacher that actually gave a shit and went out of his way to help. And he didn't last very long.

Someone in this topic said that a quarter of teachers just don't care. I call horseshit; in my entire thirteen years of education the number of teachers that actually gave a shit about their students can be counted on one hand. College and university were the best years of my life, just because I didn't have people breathing down my fucking neck and trying to "show who was in charge". People say that your school years are the best years of your lives; those people are fucking liars.

Well there's a big difference between punching someone and trying to shove someone away from you to create space between you and the attacker. In terms of personal responsibility, it's only in the public school system where it seems you can get punished for this, unlike the real world (unless you run into brutal or corrupt cops or something)

Then you must have had a pretty bad teacher - my first year teaching in the Bronx was a nightmare man, a kid broke my door opened and jumped another kid during the middle of a lesson

I took time to reflect what went wrong that year and revamped my methodology.

I can guarantee you I dont teach honors and I do teach special education children, its about - in my experience - having a social classroom.

I use a workshop model (look it up) so all the learning is done by the students in an exploration based set up

Okay so tc warned the student once, student did it again, and got in trouble for a rule thats like, universally in every public school?

And people are literally shitting on tc for this?

Jesus christ, you can easily tell who the teenager and/immature dumbasses are in this topic if theyre siding with the kid

And this is coming from a guy who loved to challenge teachers back in high school that i didnt respect.

Anyone who thinks tc is in the wrong either is immature, or just young themselves. Kid is a dumbfuck and this is completely fair, next.

Then again, one of my best friends is a teacher and my oldest sister is one as well, so I sympathize with teachers who have to put up with shitbag kids every weekday.

That is 100% not appropriate from the teacher in question. First of all, pushing and shoving happens. I'm not gonna give detention for bumping and pushing past someone. If someone grabbed the other by the shoulders and physically shoved them, maybe. That's a warning at most though unless it was an ongoing issue.

Were not getting on tc for the hood, he literally admitted it was because he wanted to show his authority

And teachers need to do that at times, or kids will literally walk all over him, ESPECIALLY if hes young.

I dont blame tc at all.

Nah this stuff can be pretty serious, those are important formative years and society fails to properly protect/guide a lot of people.

Coming from a seventh grade ELA teacher / you dont do stuff like this to apply your authority, you do it to keep the class uniform and to prevent a snowball effect of misbehavior

It's not about the hood. I honestly don't care. It's about showing the kids who is in charge.

Dude for real? Can you read?

My first year I was a complete push over. Before you can you teach anything your class has to be under control.

I teach mostly honor kids. They are typically very good and don't act up. Still they are 6th grade kids and they will do what you allow them to do. So it's my job to clamp down and set the right expectations.

True. For good reason though. We are coming off a 3 day field trip. I have no time to waste in the classroom so misbehavior won't be tolerated.

Was it repeated defiance? Or did you really give him detention after him putting it back on only one time?

Depending on the grade level, that's incredibly strict.

Honestly, like I said - I dont expect anyone who isnt a teacher to understand why we come down so hard on stuff like this

You don't have to be a teacher to understand the importance of respecting authority. Ignore bitter CE neets who probably hate teachers for reasons xyZ.

He had is hood on in class so I told him to take it off. 5-7 minutes he has it back on.

I still don't get why that is even a rule. Same thing with hats.

I think that is kinda harsh to give a lunch detention for something like that.

As a teacher myself, just wondering, is that against dress code? I normally don't care about hoodies or anything unless the school I'm teaching at does.

It's associated with gangs.

It's not about the hood. I honestly don't care. It's about showing the kids who is in charge. I'm a young looking teacher so I try to find opportunities like this to show the kids I mean business.

Oh, okay so you're just being one of those teachers.

If you are not firm with youth, they WILL take advantage of you. Build up that firm rule, then as time goes on, you can loosen up with them provided they show respect.

Yknow, I never had much a problem with teachers at my school.

Yknow who I always hated? The study hall monitors.

Idk if they were former teachers, or just people they'd grab off the street, or whatever, but they were just the nastiest people. Hated kids, clearly just wanted to be at home. All ladies in their 60s or 70s.

I get needing to be authoritarian to keep control. Study halls literally consisted of throwing 20-25% of the student body in the commons area and enforcing silence for the period. No small feat, if a bad one.

That said, there's authoritarian, then there's yelling "Don't you LOOK at my study hall!" at some poor sap as he walks past. And then giving him detention and an office referral when he looks at you in surprise when you yell, for "insubordination." No, thats no exaggeration. Sad sap here, reporting in.

Let's see... there was also the time I was brand new to the school, just transferred in after being in Montessori style schools my whole life. Was pretty dumb back then, had no idea how public schools even worked, and asked what I presumed was a teacher for directions to the classroom was going to (in fairness the school was laid out very oddly, with lots of offshoot hallways and little rhyme or reason to the numbering system). Got screamed at and given a weeks detention because I unknowingly asked one of these bitches. For asking for directions. Because I apparently "insinuated [she] was stupid."

Ooh, ooh, there was the time I got detention and a referral when they screamed at me to spit out my gum... I didn't have any gum. When I tried to prove such thery gave me detention. When I pretended to spit gum out to placate them, they gave me another. Then when they literally made me stand there, mouth open, while they inspected it, they gave me an office referral for swallowing the gum.

And every time one of these old bats retired theyd somehow find a new one. Just as mean as the last.

Seriously, fuck authoritarianism for authoritarianism's sake. It commanded no respect and made all of us hate them more. If you're going to be punished anyway, what incentive is there for following the rules?
