I dont remember the last time Republicans were actually fiscally conservative. For as long as Ive been paying attention to politics, theyve been against the welfare state, but not actually fiscally conservative. There are many of their voters who see themselves as fiscally conservative, but even there I suspect the impulse is not fiscal conservatism per se, so much as opposition to policies that help the poor on a systematic level.

Republicans who are supposedly very worried about fiscal responsibility pass a tax cut primarily targeted towards corporations and wealthy, that will add, even by the most generous estimates, at least $1 trillion dollars to the debt.

They dont mind spending tax dollars on the stuff they like. They like military spending, so thats okay. They also really really really love giving rich people tax cuts. So, when theres a conflict between lowering the national debt and lowering the tax burden for the rich, they opt for the latter. But they really really really dont want to help poor people. So, they use the excuse of fiscal responsibility because its convenient. And when there are instances when their priority of not helping people is in conflict with their avowed priority of fiscal responsibility, they opt for the former.

Democrats usually raise the taxes required to pay for the programs they want to enact. You may not like the fact that they are raising taxes or providing benefits for the poor, but theirs is actually the more fiscally conservative practice.

Not that we need that to happen, democratic enthusiasm and turnout in special elections is at an all time high. So all Republicans staying home will do is make the blue wave in to a blue tsunami.

Reagan and Bush had to put a lot in military spending though. Granted Iraq was a stupid war but it wasn't all on domestic shit either.

Sure. War happens and funding the military should always be a priority but be fiscally responsible. Rich kids dont fight wars. poor people do and while poor people may not pay taxes, some pay with their lives on the front lines.
