my favorite bit of trivia about Lord of the Rings is that it's supposed to our world, just in the way way distant prehistoric past. alot of people don't know that. but the idea was supposed to be that that world existed on this planet in prehistory and then all records of it were lost and forgotten and the world changed and we became ignorant of it. the ending is kinda sad cause basically all the magical creatures fade away. and the world becomes the mundane planet we now live on.

I've seen it said by people who have studied the series and apparently in an interview, Tolkien himself once said that it's "earth but in a different stage of imagination" https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/22034/is-tolkiens-middle-earth-in-our-universe Middle-earth is supposed to be the same world as our Earth, at a "different stage of imagination". Something like a fictional history of the real world Earth. Here is the relevant bit from a BBC interview with Tolkien (1971) (heard at about the 5:40 mark of this video): ... Copied to Clipboard!
