Tough one. Personally, and it's not necessarily something most would think is a great accomplishment, but talking a suicidal father of two down from shooting himself and being able to talk him into a pair of cuffs. And, naturally, into a psychiatric hold.

Though, there was a bittersweet and weirdly proud moment when I was at a funeral a few months ago for an officer I knew who'd been shot and killed. Literally hundreds of officers from across the country were there to show their support. It's a special thing to see.

As far as violence between people, a guy just got gunned down the other day. Gut shot with a .22. Ran 300 meters before he bled out.

But worse are the suicides. Had a guy blow the top of his head off all over his living room.

In my experience, most people want to help; the shit you see in this job, it isn't something you can take lightly. It isn't worth seeing these things and always brushing up against the worst side of humanity just to be able to boss people around.

But don't get me wrong; there are shitbags in uniform. We're not exempt from having manchildren in our ranks.

No, but I've had women obviously unbutton a few buttons to get out of citations. I also know of guys who are no longer officers (one of whom is in federal prison) who have partaken in "favors."

I can't remember the exact number for firearms. State lists it at 124, so we'll go with that. Nonviolent takedowns? They don't exist. Takedowns are inherently violent.

Are you talking about de-escalation techniques? If so, there's no set hour amount; it's mixed into different blocks. Less than firearms, though.

Unfortunately people have the unreasonable expectation that professionals with a modicum of power (lawyers, doctors, police officers, etc) should tolerate extreme amounts of immature bullshit without any kind of recourse. They're humans, too. They have lives, children, dreams, hopes, etc. Treating them like shit because you have some goofy political views doesn't just mean you're treating "the man" like shit. It means you're treating a fellow human like shit.

And you know what? Most cops I know went into it for the right reason, and they do put their lives in an unreasonable amount of danger relative to how little respect they get. Are all cops heroes? Of course not. But I'd say on average they're much more heroic than the annoying little shits that pester them every day as a sort of sociopolitical statement.

Tough question. Depends on the criminal, whether they're on drugs, etc. It may look bad at times to see three or four officers restraining an individual, but it's safer for everyone involved that way. You have to realize how difficult it can be to get someone into cuffs when they don't want to be cuffed. It's something you'd have to experience.

I don't have to witness them, if I have credible witnesses.

If an assault occurs, I don't have to witness that assault to proceed with filing charges.

Tough question. Nobody feels they get paid enough. I can't put a number on it. I chose this profession, so I don't throw the "putting my life on the line" card around. Pay me a livable wage, let me do my job. I'm good.

Another tough one. I can't put a number on it. Twice this month, legitimately, but there are times when the feeling spikes due to something suspicious and then dissipates as quickly. Is it just about how I feel, or whether there's legitimate danger when all the facts are laid out?

Mid-20s.

I suppose that's fair to say, but I've been told it'll catch up to some people. Eventually, the stress will manifest itself somehow. Not yet, though.

Is there ever any pressure from the local government to ignore procedure to protect the politicians?

I ask because I know that not all departments have corrupt officers, but from what I can tell departments with corrupt officers tend to be found in places worth corrupt local government. Not saying all departments in areas with corrupt local governments will have this problem either...

I've never had this happen to me, but this does happen in smaller departments. In fact, small town councils sometimes try to use police to settle vendettas. A chief worth his salt will insulate you from that bullshit, though.

They train you as much as they can, but honestly, it's impossible to fully be prepared for half the shit you deal with. I relied on just being a human being whose also been through some shit. Related as much as possible, and just treat the guy like he's a guy having a shit day.

Helps to use the idea of his kids as leverage. In this case, anyway. That's not a good one to use if their kids are the reason for the crisis.
